Description of the modification

1.

The name requiring protection as a traditional term should include an additional spelling:

now:

‘Traditional term: Federweisser’

after:

‘Traditional term: Federweisser / Federweißer’.

2.

The protected designations of origin or protected geographical indications concerned should be extended:

now:

‘Quality specification:

Wine with a protected geographical indication (PGI)’

after:

‘Quality specification:

Wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO)

Wine with a protected geographical indication (PGI)’.

3.

The category of grapevine product concerned should be changed:

now:

‘the grapevine product category or categories concerned:

wine’

after:

‘the grapevine product category or categories concerned:

‘partially fermented grape must’.

4.

The summary of the definition and conditions of use should be changed:

now:

‘Summary of definition/condition of use:

Partially-fermented grape must from Germany with geographical indication or other EU States; geographical indications borrowing from ‘vin de pays’ wine-growing zone; “Federweißer”: in the most common designation for partially-fermented grape must in view of regional diversity of designations.’

after:

‘Partially-fermented grape must from fresh grape must with a protected geographical indication or protected designation of origin coming from a Member State, which is intended for direct consumption.’

Explanation of the grounds for modification

Re. 1: This change will mean that both spellings commonly found in Germany are included.

Re. 2: Under national law, use of the term is not restricted to wine with a protected geographical indication. This was not previously reflected in EU law and should therefore be clarified.

Re. 3: Under national law, the term ‘Federweisser / Federweißer’ may only be used for a product under the grapevine product category of ‘partially fermented grape must’ as provided for under point 11 of Part II of Annex VII to Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013. For this reason, the current grapevine product category of ‘wine’ as provided for under point 1 of Part II of Annex VII to Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013, should therefore be replaced.

Re. 4: This change takes into account amendments since made to national law and the conditions now applicable to the use of the term.
