Description

` Leners Patent No. 72,592. ma December 24, 1867.
IMPROVBD WASHING-MACHINE.
@the righule aterra in in tipa httert tant mit mating pnt ify tige smic.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be it known that I, W. E. BIRD, of West Bridgewater, in the county of Ply-mouth, and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; `andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon The nature of' my invention consists in an improved arrangement i'orattaching to an ordinary wash-tub adjustable levers and a dasher or plunger, the whole forming an improved washing-machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction Figure 1 represents in perspective a view of an ordinary wash-tub with my invention attached. Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan of the same. B, figs. 1 and 2, isa clasp or clamp embracing the side ot the tub, and is sc'enred to the same by means of the clamp-screw C, iig. 2. To the upper end of this clump'I attach a lever, H, by means ofthe joint D. K is a standard attached to the opposite end of lthe lever Hby the joint P, the standard K serving to operate the plunger or dasher L, figs. 2 and 3. About midway of the lever H, I attach, by means of the pivot N, a shield or disk, M, the said shield having! upon its upper edge two sockets S S, through which the lever or handle R is passed. In the lower part of the shield M are perforations a a, &c.,'through which a pin, O, gs. 1 and 3, passes. As the pin O also passes through a hole in the lever H, it holds the shield N, and, consequently, the lever or handle R, in position. To change the angle which the handle R makes with the lever H, I have simply to remove Athe piu O, and', having'rcvolved thev handle R around "the centre-pin N until it assumes the desired position, that indicated by Ril, for instance, replace the pinv O. The end of the lever H has two projectionsor stops, h h, hgs. 1 and 2, which strike against corresponding shoulders on B, tig. 2, so that when it is desirable to take the clothes out of the tub, the lever H may be raised up vand thrown back a little past the perpendicular, and be allowed torest on' the said projections and shoulders.
The advantagesthat I claim for my invention are, that it is cheap and simple,- and when united with an i ordinarywashstub it forms a. complete washing-machine, and that the' handleR maybe made .to assume any position desirediby the operator. l
My invention possesses three desirable features, which I think giveit a distinctive character: rst, it may be combined with an ordinary wash-tub, and thus form a veryconvenien't and cheap washing-machine; second, the handle or lever by which it is operated may be set at any desired angle, thus making it convenient for the operator; third, by the arrangement of the stops-h 7L, all of the working parts may, when raised up out of the tub, be poised in a convenient position, as shown by the dotted lines in iig. 1. While standing in this position the stops h h will rest against corresponding shoulder on B, and the dasher L is suspended over the tub', so allv the drip will fall into the tub.
Having thus described my invention, I will now proceed to set forth my claims. What yI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The combination of the clamps B, thejoint D, and lever H, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth` .2. The adjustable shield M, in combination withvthe handle R and lever H, substantially asdeseribed, and j for vthe purpose set forth.
W. E. BIRD.
