Description
@uitrit tetes @anniv @fitta WILLIAM SIEFERT, 0F NEW` YORK, Y.
Letters .Patent No. 65,837, dated Jaaa 18, 1867.
IMPROVED SAD-IRON.
TQ ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SIEFERT, of' New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and useful improvement in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l i
Figure 1 represents the handle and the sadiron detached.
Figure 2 shows the same complete readyifor'use. i
The nature of 'my invention consists in the manner of attaching the handle to the sad-iron by means of a pin or projection fast to the handle stem, and fitting into a peculiar slot made in a hub attached on the sad-iron, in combination with a suitable spring.
In the accompanyingdrawing, A represents the sad-iron constructed in the usual manner, and provided with a hub, B, on its top side, into which the stem C of the handle D is made to fit easily. On the stem C a pin or projection, a, is firmly attached, and to the lower end of this stem C a spiral spring, s, is fastened. In one side of the hub B a slot, c, is cut, passing some distance pe1'pendicular,'thcn continuing some distance horizontally, and then turning upwards again. The perpendicular and horizontal slot c and v is made of such a size that the pin or projection a on the handle stem C can pass easily in the same, while that part of the slot v turning upwards is made to it the pin or projection a snugly. When the handle D is to be attached to the sad-iron A, the stem C, with its spring 8, is inserted into the hole in the hub I3, so that the pin or projection a, :attached to said stem, will pass into the slot v in the hub B. The handle I) is then pressed down so as to force the projection a into the horizontal part of the slot v', compressing thereby the Aspring s, when the handle is 'turned around until said pin a comes opposite the upwards turn of the slot vi, when the action of the spring s,
icoinpressod by the form'er operation,will force the pin into that part v" of the slot, and-keep thereby the handle D firmly locked on the sad-iron A. Instead of attaching the springs to the handle stem C, the same may be placed in the bottotn of the hole in the hub B, and made so as to act against the bottom of the stem when the same is inserted; but as one handle may answer for several sad-irons, and may be used with one while the other iron is being heated, I prefer to attach the spring to the handle stem, as above described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is
A sad-iron, having stem C with spiral spring s and projection a thereon, in combination with the slot v v', with the upward projection therein, as described, when constructed. arranged, and operating as herein specified.
WILLIAM SIEFERT.
