Description

@einen tntrs latat @fitta IMPROVED SHUITBR-GATGHES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
vBe itknown that I, FRANeoIs RAYMOND, of Woodhaven, in the county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Catches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadA to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specication, in whicl1- Figure 1 isa front view of a shutter-catch constructed according to my invention, showing the same as applied to the shutter. 4
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view, showing the invention as used simply as an ordinary catch" Figure 3 is a similar sectional view, showing the invention as employed to securely lock the shutter to lose the window, and to fasten the slats of such shutter in a closed position.
Figure 4 is a detached plan view of the catch alone.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The object of this invention is to provide a shutter-fastening which may not only beused as an ordinary catch, but may also be employed, when desired, to securely lock the shutter in a closed position, and to hold closed the slats of the same, thus eii'ectually preventing the shutter from being opened from the outside.
The invention consists in a laterally-moving bar pivoted to the catch, and so combined with a stud .xed upon the shutter, that when turned laterally underneath the same, the said stud will rigidly hold the catch in position to lock fast the shutter. The invention further consists in so arranging the aforesaid pivoted bar that.
when turned laterally, as just mentioned, it will be brought underneath the rod which operates the slats of the r shutter in such manner as to prevent the downward movement of the rod, thus eeetually fastening the slats in a closedcondition.`
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe l it with reference to the drawings. e
A represents the window-sill and B the shutter.A Formed in the lower end of the latter, a little distance from the centre thereof, is a rectangular slot or hole, a, into which is fitted a small metallic frame, b. The
catch C is pvoted in the frame by a transverse pin, a', and is furnished at the upper side of its outer end with a hook, c, the outer extremity of which is inclined, as shown at c. The inner endof the aforesaid catch is formed with a similar hook, d, at its under side, which, when the shutter is closed, catches over or upon a stud, e, attached to the inner window-sill, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3; the outermost hook c, when the shutter is thrown open, catching in like manner upon a suitable staple or hook provided in the wall in which the window is situated, to hold the said shutter open. Formed in the upper side ofthe inner extremity of the catch C is a recess, d', at the innermost end of which is an angular' shoulder, a*. A* indicates aber, which is pivoted at its inncrmostvend tothe catch C by a vertical pin, 6*, andv is provided near its opposite extremity with an angular lip, 0*, which, when the said bar is parallel with the catch, lits under the angular shoulder a* in such manner as to prevent the bar A* from being forced upward and straining its pin or pivot, 6*. The aforesaid bar is furnished with a knob,f, which serves as a handle, -whereby the same may be turned into a position parallel with the catch, as shown in iig.'2, or at right angl-es thereto, as represented iu tig. 4, the bar being retained in either position by a dat spring, g, attached to one side of the catch, and pressing .against the flat surface of the side or the end ofthe bar A, according to the position ofr the said bar. The catch is pivoted at such a distance from the centre ofthe shutter that when the bar A is turned at right angles to the catch C, the knobj' thereof will be brought under the rod m, which operates thcslatsfn ofthe shutter B; and a stud, r, fixed upon the lower part of the shutter, formed preferably upon the front surface of the frame 6, is in such position that the bar A, when brought into the positionjust described, will be situated immediately underneath the said stud 7. When the shutter is closed and the bar A is situated parallel with the catch C, the said catch simply holds upon the stud e ot' the window-sill, after the manner of an ordinary catch,y and may be readily detached therefrom to open the shutter by slightlyletting upward its inner end, but by turning the bar A* at right angles to the catch, and underneath the stud 1j, as hcreinbefore set forth, the said stud 7' holds down the bar A, and consequently the inner end of the catch C, and prevents the latter from being disengaged from the stud e, thus etfectually locking the shutter in a. closed position, at the same time that the knobf of thebar AF, being situated under the lower extremity ot' the rod m of the shutter, prevents the downward movement of such rod, and effectually keeps the slats n from being turned or opened.
what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The pivoted laterally-moving bar AS, in combination with the catch C and fixed stud. r on the shutter,
substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. .The arrangement of the pivoted bur A* stantially as and for the purpose specified.
