IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-BUCKLES.'
ooo
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY'CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Cocks, of the eity of Richmond,V county ot' Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles for Harness, 85o.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in whichi l Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a view of separate parts, showing the manner ot' connecting.
Figure 3 represents a metallic loop or slide.
Figures 4 and 5 are pins or bolts.
The same letters in the diiierent iigures represent corresponding parts of the invention.
My invention has for its object the production of a buckle, or device in lieu thereof, for harness, 82e., by
which a greater degree of convenience, beauty, and strength is obtained than with other bucklesrtbis arrange ment being susceptible of a highly ornamental finish, and as a traeeor tug-buckle, when desired for heavy draught, insures much greater security than the ordinary buckle, besides being very convenient in adjusting.
To enable others skilled in the art t`o make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A and B represent tugs or other straps to be connected. The strap A is provided with holes m and slots n, at even distances apart, and at suitable intervals along said strap. The strap is provided with ahole, m',
`and. slot n', near one end', corresponding to the apertures m and it in strap A. The metallic loop C slides over the straps, and is held in position by spring P, which latter' is riveted at one cud to strap B, the other end `having right-angular projections that lock into shoulder' I in loop C. The bolt or pin d is provided witha collar or shoulder, 7, near its head, over which the longitudinal edges ot' loop C slidefthus securing pin d in' its place, as shown in iig. 1. In adjusting the devices, the segmental-headed pin e is inserted. When the countersink e is sufficiently over slots n and 1t to admit said pin, and before loop C is quite in position, the head of pin e rests iu countersink c', and its point terminating through hole s, loop C is then movedin the direction ot' pin cl, until caught by spring P, and the pin e is thus passed under pin d, and thereby secured in pla-ee; the slots n and n in the straps allowing the described change in the position of theA pins d and e. '.lhe slot J, in the bottom of loop C, is provided for the accommodation ofthe endet' pin cl in adjusting' the straps. The end ot'spring P is raised, allowing loop C to slide back when the pins d andk e are raised or removed, the position ot' the strap changed, and the pins again inserted in another locality in strap A, thus lengthening or short-` ening the connection as desired.
The design in using two pins is for greater security as a tug-buckle, or where agreat amount of strength is required. For greater convenience, when less strength is required, the pin e, and consequently the slots 'it and n', may be dispensed with, or the bolt or pin cZ may be riveted fast in hole m', and the hole 'm and slot J dispensed with. A round hole should then take the place of slot n, the slot-1t', in strap B, remaining the same,4
as shown, which allows strap B to be drawn out sufficient to bring the head of rivet d over pin e and thus securing the latter in its place. The slot in the top of loop C, for the accommodation ofthe spring and pins, is not required to extend theentire length of said loop, but it' required for strength, may be closed at one or more points centrally, leaving suiiicieut length-of-slot at each end for the proper action of the pins'und spring. Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claimv and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The loop or slide C, spring l?, and one orboth of the pins d and e, in combination with the straps A and B, all arranged and operated substantially as set forth and for the purpose described.
l WILLIAM H. COCKS Witnesses'.
