Description

A. B. BEAN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Leners Patent No. 91,072, dared June s, 1869.
IMPROVE!) RATCHET-FEED.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the Same To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, A. B. BEAN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Gonnecti* ont, have invented a new Improvement in Ratchet- Feed and I do hereby declare the following, when taken `in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, and which said drawings constitute part' of this specification, and represent in Figure 1, a front view, and in l Figures 2, 3, and 4,. sectional views illustrating the three diii'erent positions.
This invention relates to an improvement in the ratchet-feed, for which Letters Patent were granted to me, bearing date December 1, 1868, and is especially adapted to iron-planers, but applicable to various kinds of machines; and
The invention consists in a double pawl having arianged within it a cam fixed to the bearing upon which the pawl turns, and a spring-head within the pawl, which will pass over the cam so as to holdvthe pawl centrally free from the ratchet-wheel, or turned to either side for the purpose of feeding, as the case may be.
To enable others skilled in the artto fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the ratchet-wheel fixed to the shaft B, the said shaft being in connection with whatever it is desirable to feed.
C is a lever to which power is applied for operating the feed, which imparts to the level' 'a vibratory movenient on theshat't B.
On the said lever is fixed a stud, D, over which a double-ended pawl, E and F, is placed, turning'i'eely on the stud D to the right or left, as from the position in fig. 3 to that in iig. 4and vice tersa, this change' reversing the action of' the feed.
Within the pawls a recess, H, is formed, so as to receive therein a cam, I, which is rigidly fixed to the stud D by a set-screw or otherwise, and in the handle L of the pawls a head, N, is arranged, so as to be forced down on the cam by a suitable spring, the upper end of the cam being constructed so as to receive the end of the head, as seen iu fig. 2, and hold the pawls in a central position so that the vibration of' the lever C has no eiiect upon the wheel A. l
If desired to turn the wheel A to the left, touch the handle L and press lit over to the position seen in iig. 3. The head N being easily forced from ofilthe cam I, and falling down to the left ofthe cam, holds the pawl in that position.
If desired to turn the wheel Ain the opposite direction, press the handle over, as seen in fig. 4.
Having fully described my invention, f
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to se;
cure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe arrangement of the fixed cam I within the double pawl E and iF, and combined with the head N, so as to operate substantially in the manner set forth.
Witnesses: A. B. BEAN.
