This invent-ion has for its object to provide n Convenientdeviee for raising and lowering the upper and lower sn-sh of n. window, and fastening either of them in any desired position as regards height.
A is a. window-frame, in which are fitted the upper and lower sashes B B in the usual willy. A long, thi'nf, and narrow metal bar, a a, is fastened at its upper end to the middle of the window-frame on the inside at its upper part, and passes down inside of the lower sash AB. 'A straightrnck, c c, is fastened at its upper end to the top of the upper sash B, nnd lies close on the inside of the bur fz (L, with which it corresponds in size and length. The lower ends of the bur i a end rack c c are both enclosed by a. loop or band, b. By this arrangement the upper sash B can be lowered, when the rack c c will slide through the band b, and by means of a. thumb-screw, d, that passes through the band I) and the rod a a and beurs against the rack, it may be held nt :my point, und thus the upper sash may be fastened ut :my height in the window when` lowered. The lower sash B has n metal plate, c, screwed to the upper part on the inner'side of the window, to which plate is pivoted on the outer side of the sash n. toothed wheel, g, the teeth of which telle in the teeth of the rack c c, and when it is turned. by e crank-key, 7l., raises or lowers the sash B to any desired point, where it is held by :t catch-rod, z', that is pivoted at one end to the top of the sash, and locks the wheels g by drawing its free end between the teeth, :is shown clearly in figs. 1, 2. I The crank-key h is loose to hang on the side of the window-frame when not needed for raising or lowering the sash.
Having thus described my invention, Icleim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bar a. a, the reel; c e, and the thumb-screw d, the wheel g'on the plate e, :mnd the catch-rod z', arranged and operating as and for the purpose specified. SHERMAN SMITH.
