TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that we, GEORGE KING, JOHN GOMBER, und LYNDHURS T. SHOPE, of Frederick, in the county 4of Frederick, and State of-Maryland, have invented a new and useful improvement in Sash-Fastener; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tonmke and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,-forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a window in section, with our improved device for fastening the sash attached. This invention relates to a new and improved device for fastening window-sashes, and consists 4in attaching racks to the sides of the sashes to enga-ge in projecting catches in the frame, bythe pressure of springs when. thesashes are raised, `from which catches the rack-teeth are released by pressure on the jsashes, which relieves the springs,as hereinafter more particularly described.
- A represents an ordinary window-frame, containing upper and lower'sliding-sashes B B. On the in'ner sides ofthe sashes, behindA the mouldings aca, are fastened metal racks b b, having teeth pointing downwards,
which engage in metal catch projections c c, secured to the inside of the window-frame under-the moulding. On the outside of the sasbes BB are placed springs d d, with rollers on their ends, that are made fast to `|the mouldings a a, or upon the sashes themselves, and press the sashes inlward in such a manner that therack-'teeth shall engage in the catches c c, when the sashes, or eitherof them, ure raised, and thus hold them up at any desired height.
To lower a sash it is only necessary-to push against it so as to compress the springs, and thus 'disengage the rack-teeth from the catches; and for this purposel the sashes't loosely between the mouldings, with suiE- cient play for the action and reaction ofthe springs as described. v
Having described our invention, WeA claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten'tis- The hooked racks b. b, secured to the inner side of the sashes B, behind the moulding a, and held, engaging .with the metal projections c, `upon the inside of the wooden frame, by'meaus' of the springs d d, havngrollers,
all constructed and described' and arranged in such a manner that the sashes shall be pressed outward to raise or lower as herein setforth.
I GEORGE KING,
JOHN GOMBER, l -LYNDHURST T. SHOPE.
