TO ALL WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN: f
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SCHAEFER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have i" invented e. Spring and Friction-Roller for Regulating Sash; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and lettersiof reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a section of my invention, represented as, attached vto the windoW-jamb. Figure 2 is a perspective representation of the same, detached from the window. The object oi my invention is to provide means for holding loose sash in window-frames in such a manner as to prevent a lateral motion which frequently renders the common sash-spring inoperative, and otherwise pro- I duces a disagreeable rattling noise; and its nature consists in the use of a cylindrical screw turned intothe i jamb-casing, and having fitted into its cavity the shank of a pulley-fork operated by a spiral spring. By this arrangement a convenient device is provided for holding sash in position to be easily run up and down in the frame, and also press the sash against that side to `which the lock is put on.
In order to give a cori-.ect understanding of the invention I have vmarked corresponding parts with the same letter, and will give a detailedV description.
A represents the cylinder, having the screw-thread Zi, in order that it may be turned into the jamb-casing m such a distance as will allow the roller ql to press against sash n, having more or less lateral motion, asrthe case may be. C shows'the shank of the pulley-fork adjusted in the cylinder A, and held by pin f, so as not to get out of place when the sash n is removed, and yet have a longitudinal motion by means of the pressure of the sash in one direction and the force of the coilspring 1 in another. The roller d is fitted to revolve between forks e,
Operation.
A hole, of suitable size, must be made in tlicjamb-casing; after which the cylinder A can be turned in, by means of a common wrench, to such a depth as will allow the full force of the spring 1 topress the roller d against sash 1t and permit the shank c to have a backward longitudinal motion for overcoming the inequality of the width lof sash. This can be easily done by turning the cylinder A in or out as the natureof the case may require. It will be seen, from thisdeseription, that provision is made for adjusting roller d by means of screwcylinder A, not heretofore used, and prevent too great a longitudinal motion of shank C.
Having thus fully described my device, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the screw-cylinder A, shank C, spring' I, and fork e, with the roller d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' CHAS. A. SCI-IAEFER.
