IMPROVBD FASTENING'IOR GATES AND BARN-DOORS.

Be it known that I, EZEKIEL PEA, of Mechanicsburg; Sangamon county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Mode of Fastening Gates or Barn-Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in an improvement upon the common gate or door-latch, by a combination of the latch and spring.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed t0 describe its construetion and operation.

I useI the common iron latch, marked B, and near the end, where it is fastened to the gate, I attach an upright piece, also made of iron, and marked A, extending some four or five inches above the gate, and working upon the same bolt With the latch. The upper part of this dpi-ight piece, being pressed backwards, or toward the right, operates as a lever upon the latch to raise it above the catch. The spring marked C is made of steel, and extends from the point on the latch, marked D, (where it is hooked over the latch, and slides along it when the latch moves up and down,) downwards to E, and then, turning, runs parallel with the latch to the points marked by the two screws, which fasten the spring-to the gate, where it is fastencdpto the gate, with two woodscrews at the point marked.

What I claim as my invention,landdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- This combination of latch B, spring C and lever A, applied to gate and door-fasteningaias described.
