Ecologist & postdoc at the Institute for Bird Populations (he/him). I love all taxa large and small, but am especially interested in the "Psocoptera" (non-parasitic Psocodea, aka barkflies), especially in western North America!

• I often photograph insects on white and black backgrounds (and other colors) to emphasize their color, shape, & personality. I usually do this in the field, using a small, portable "studio;" it's basically just a piece of glass suspended over a sheet of paper. Check out the inverts on white backgrounds project for more!

• I maintain lists of vertebrate families of the world, insect families of the world, & plant families of the world, based on Catalog of Life & APG IV, with modifications, and which I try to keep up-to-date with recent taxonomic changes. These are useful for keeping track of what families you've seen, what families you haven't seen, and maybe other things -- feel free to duplicate, comment on, use, etc: Vertfams | Bugfams | Plantfams

• Lmk if there are any scientifically significant species (especially insects) I should keep an eye out for in Southern California -- I have a great time doing "side quests!"
