Welcome!

After more than two months, I was pleased to see that I am not anymore alone in this project. So welcome @theacebookworm and thank you for joining! It is good to know that I am not the only one gifted person on INat. 😁🤗
I hope that other gifted people will join soon.

BioBlitz - schönstes Foto?

Liebe Bioblitzer*innen

Geastrum / Earthstar - decoding the key

This is my attempt to understand the preliminary key to Geastrum / Earthstars in NZ. Like always a huge appreciation for J. Cooper for doing the work and putting this together. Any errors in this entry are mine! It is far easier to work with these frb if one has a macro lens to take photos. Although a hand lens would yield good results with familiarity of the ID features.

365 mosses: day 141

This is Aulacomnium palustre. Distinctive features of this species include densely packed rhizoids amongst its leaves on the lower stem, rounded leaf cells, and a midvein that ends shortly before the end of the leaf and is often not quite straight. Like the midvein, the leaf margins are also often a little irregular. Aulacomnium palustre usually grows in ephemeral wetlands, pond margins or wet pastures. It is native to the northern hemisphere and introduced in Aotearoa. G...

South Australian toxic algal bloom 2025 - Elasmobranch skin flushing

One of the most characteristic observations during the algal bloom mortality is the appearance of blushing - red blotchy skin - in many of the rays and sharks (elasmobranchs) that have washed up.

This is a very peculiar phenomenon, for which there is no clear cut explanation. Much of the research my colleagues and I did over 30 years was on the control of the blood circulation in the skin, mostly in mammals. In mammals like humans, this type of skin flushing is due to the small bl...

South Australian toxic algal bloom 2025 - What is going on with the leatherjackets? Part 2: skin lesions.

Surveying the fish mortality at Seacliff and Seaford on 11th and 12th July, a very high proportion of the leatherjackets exhibited some kind of skin loss, usually on the upper part of the body towards the tail, and usually only one side. This seems to affect all species, including larger Bluefinned Leatherjackets. In some individuals, especially at Seaford, the tail was missing in whole or in part. At first I thought this could be due to the cytolytic action of Karenia mikimotoi, but looki...
