Opening up Amphibans and Reptiles to curators
On iNaturalist, only curators can make changes to the taxonomy. And if a Taxon Framework has Taxon Curators, only the Taxon Curators can make changes to the corresponding clade.
For years, I've been the sole Taxon Curator of Amphibians and Reptiles. The former references Amphibians Species of the World and the latter references Reptile Database. But lately, I've had trouble keeping up on all the taxonomic updates for these branches given my other responsibilities as ED of iNat.
I don't want to be a bottleneck for curation work on these clades so I've removed myself as Taxon Curator for these clades effectively opening them up to all curators.
Thanks you for your help keeping these clades up to date and in sync with their references. Please do not add internodes subfamilies etc not in these references as the intention is to follow these references rather than add lots of complexity to the clades not represented. Also please do not add hybrid or extinct taxa not in the references.
My general workflow for maintaining these clades has been to periodically compare the references to iNat. ASW updates almost daily, and Reptile Database updates all at once in big batches separated by several months. Here are docs comparing ASW<->iNat and Reptile Database<->iNat current today. The sheet labeled "Swaps" are all the taxa in iNat that are not in the references (ie, should probably be swapped away). The sheet labeled "News" are the taxa in the reference not in iNat (ie, should probably be added).
I use these sheets to find out whats going on - e.g. by reconciling Swaps and News I can see that in ASW, the genus Orixalus was lumped into the existing genus Gracixalus
Orixalus -> Gracixalus
resulting in some one-to-one downstream swaps
Orixalus ananjevae -> Gracixalus ananjevae
Orixalus carinensis -> Gracixalus carinensis
Orixalus jinxiuensis -> Gracixalus jinxiuensis
Orixalus nonggangensis -> Gracixalus nonggangensis
and 2 new taxa
Gracixalus huaping
Gracixalus weii
To keep things in line with ASW, I'd:
(1) create the 6 Gracixalus taxa
(2) make 4 taxon changes swapping the Orixalus species into the corresponding Gracixalus species
(3) make a taxon change swapping genus Orixalus into genus Gracixalus
Many of these changes involve complicated splits that require atlases and take time. For these, I often make a temporary deviation and then open a flag to gather more information about how to make the split.
I hope removing myself as a bottleneck will be an improvement. Please feel free to mention me on any flags or draft taxon changes where I can help. Als always, I deeply appreciate all the curation efforts to keep the taxonomy in sync from our dedicated curators! Thank you!!
