weeasaeww @Hingis JOHN BEATTY, OF NORWALK, CONNCTICUT. Letters Patent No. 88,116, dated March-23, 1869; ntedated Februan'y 2, 1869.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whomt may comun-n:V
Be it known that I, JOHN P. BEATTY, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a hat made according to my invention.`
Iignre 2 is a plan view, looking into the interior of a at. l
This invention relates to the class of hats called ventilating-hats; and
It consists in means for supporting the lining, and holding it oii' free and olea-r from the crown of the hat.
The letter A designates the brim, and the letter B, the crown of a hat, to' which I have applied my'invention.
The crown B, at the part next to the brim, is made o a. larger diameter, as is shownat D D, than the upper part, O, of said crown, the diameter of said upper part O being about the same as the diameter of theliuing E, which lining E is connected to the hat, and supported in position by means of a wire, F, which is corrugated, or bent iuto a zigzag vform, the angles of the wire being attached to the interior of the said enlarged part D of the hat-crown, and to the lining E, in alternation.
The upper part ofthe lining is le: freerthe supporting-wire F being attached to it at its lower edge, and,
consequently, the upper part of the lining is in apliant condition, and is free to'conform to the head of the wearer.
The air-space G, between the lining Eand the interior of the part D of the hat-crown, is not materially obstructed by the zigzag wire F, but through saidspace the free passage of air Kto and from the interior of the hat is allowed at all times.
The shoulder H, formed between the enlarged part D and the reduced part G of the hat, extends all around the crown of the hat, in a symmetrical manner, and the same can be made square and abrupt, or may be made with a curve, according to the judgment or taste of the maker.
My invention is applicable to hats of any material.
The zigzag connecting-wire F can be applied without enlarging the lower part of the crown of the hat.
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claim, is-
As a new articleof manufacture, a hat, having its sweat secured in place by a single wire, arranged and attached in a zigzag form, between its lower edge and the body of the hat, and s'o as to leave its upper edge loose, substantially as herein shown and described.
This specification signed by me, this 22d. day of April, 1868.
JOHN P. BEATTY.
