A. B.y WOODARD, ALFRED CENTRE, AND SAMUEL A. WOODARD,OF'HORNELLSVILLE,
ASSIGNORS TO THEMSEIAVES AND ORSON MOSHER, OF'HRNELLSVILLE, NEW YORK.
Lettere Pa'te'nt No. 79,930, datedVJ-'uly '14, 1868.
IMPEOVED EAMES-PASTENER.
TOALDWHOM I'l MAY GONCERN:
Be lit known that we, A. B. WOODARD, of Alfred Centre, in the county of Allegany, and State of New York, and SAMUELIL WOODARVD, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, and State of New. York, (a.ssguo1's to themselvesand Orson Mosher, of Hornellsvillein the county of Steuben, and State of New York,) have inventeda new ,and useful Improvement in Haines-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that'the followingis a full, clear, and'cxact description thereof, which lwill enable others skilled in the art to make and` use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- The figure is a. longitudinal section of our improved'llames-fastener. Similar letters of reference indicate corrcspondingparts. l i 4 Our invention'has for its object to furnish an improved hautes-fastener, simple in construction ande'ective in operation, drawing the haines closer together during the operation of locking, and holding them?A securely when locked l v It consists in the construction and combination of -the various parts, ashereinafter more fully described. A is a strap, upon the outer end of which is formed a hook or eye, a, by means of which it is connected with the llames-ring of one of the hamcsz The strap'A is slightly curved,to correspond with thef curve of the lower part of the collarfand its innery side is grooved orchannelled, so as to form side langesaz, asshown in the figure The body of the strap-A has holes formed through it, as shown in' the drawings, to `receive the catches.
B is the other strap, which has a. hook or`eye, bl, formed upon its outer end, by means of whichitisattacbed to thering of one of the haines. .The inner side of the strap B is grooved or channelled, or has side anges, b2, formed upon its s'idc edges, so as to -reccive the strap `A, and hold the two strapsA B always in linenvith each other. The body ofthe strap B, towards its free end, is slotted, to allow` the catches to pass thro.ugh,`and it has ears, b3, formed upon its outer side, to which is pivoted the lever-catch D.Y 3
.The lever D is made in about the form shown in the ligure, that is to say, it has n. hook or-catch, d, formed upon its inner end, which passes through the slot in the strap B, and through one or the other of the holes through the strap A. Upon the inner side of the outer' part of the lever D are formed side Hanges d2, forming a box or chamber fdr `the reception of the spring-lcver'catchc.
-iThelever-catch c is pivoted in the chamber formed upon Athe inner side of'thelouter end of the lever D,
and its 'catch'cl` projects through the slot in `t-he strap B,'a:nd passes through one or `the other of theholes through the strap A, soas to lock the straps'A and B together.y
The lever or arm- C extends along the inner side of .the-box or chamber 'of' the lever D, and its outer ond is bent or curved outward, so as to close the outer end ofthe lchamber inwhich it is placed, and be in a favorable position to be operated to unfasten the fastener, and at the same tiinegbe protect-edfrom beingunfastened 'by anaccidcntal blow. l i l E is a wire spring coiled around a pin or'post attached to the lever'D, so as tobe between the levers D and C, and to hold thc catch c forward.
The lever-catch C is kept from being forced toofnr forward by4 the shoulders formed upon the lever-catch C striking against shoulders formed upon 'the inner sides of the anges 6F of the lever D, as shown in dot-ted linesin the figure. l l
In using'the fastener, .the leverD 'is thrown back, as shown inred in the figure. The straps BnndA- are then brought together, so that the catch'dl may pass through one of the holes in the-strap A. The outer end of the lever D is then drawn forward 4to-its place, drawing t-ho haines more...eloselyinto place upon the collar. At the same timo the spring Eyields, allowing the catch@l to pass through one-of the holes inthe strap A, so that the said catch may lock the fastener,'and hold it securely until unfastened by pressing out the free end of the lever C with the hand.
By this fastener the haines aire drawn closer together while being fastened, and are so secured that they cannot become accidentally unfastened.
Heving thiis described onr invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by'Lctters Patent- An improved llames-fastener, formed by the combination ofthe stiap A, strap B, lever-catch D, lever-catch C, and spring E, or equivalent, with cach other, said parts being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
