'lO ALL WHOM IT-MAY CONCERN: i
Be it known that I, JAMES C. Covnnr, of'Townsendville, in the county of Seneca, and State of New York, have invented a newfrmdV useful Improvement in Eames-Tugs and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partiof this specification.
The object of the present invention is to produce a, haines-tug of such construction as will obviate the use of heel-chains or buckles for the lengthening and shortening of the trace.
,This hamesitug, according to thepresent invention, is made of a strip of malleable iron, or other suitable metal, perforated or provided with V-shaped holes or slots, having a centretonguepiece for the reception of a.
i V-shaped block fixed to one end of the trace, by means of -which block the trace is engaged with the harnestug, where, through a suitably-arranged spring-stop,'that strikes against the end 'of the tongue to the said V-slots, the block is held firmly in place, and consequently the trace fastened to the llames-tug.
' In addition to the above, 4this invention also consists in fastening the hames-clip to the hames by bolts, in lieu of rivets, as heretofore, whereby they can he removed and replaced as desired, and with facility and ease; and also in giving a curve or bend to the end of the haines-tug where hung to the collar, so as to throw and hold it oiiifrom the collar and shoulder of the horse; In the accompanying platefof drawings my improvements in hams-tugs are illustrated- Y Figure 1 being a side or face view of the hames-tugor trace, an( Figure 2 a. section taken in the plane of the line :e 2:, tig. 1. Similar letters of referenceindieate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents my improved homes-tug, which is made of a strip or bar of malleable iron,
or other suitable metal, or equivalent material. This bar A is provided with a series of similar V-shaped openings or slots, Cthztt are arranged along its length, each slot being provided with a centre'tongue-pi-eee, D. The sides or edges E to the slots C are bevelled oli. At the 'end F, to haines-tug, is the bar, which is c,urved or bent into aJ shape to stand oi from the collar and shoulders of the horse, and at such end is the hames-.clip G, that, by means of bolts H, is fastened thereto, said homes-clip being let into the llames-tug ilush .with its surface, as and for a purpose hereinhefore stated. I, a loop, at end J of hames-tug, for the trace-strap to pass under, and K a loopen each side or ledge for the back and belly-bands of the harness, to be hung or fastened thereto. L, the trace-strap, to which, at one end, M, is fastened a block, N, on one side of which is fixed n V-shaped block, O,of suitable size, to be inserted in the slots C to the homes-tug, passing by its groove P over` the ,centre tongue B thereto. O, a spring-lever stop, arranged in block N in proper position to se't against the end of the tongue D of the slots. This lever O is arranged in a recess, R, of the block N, and at one end is provided-with a. thumb-piece, S, for convenience in operating it.
I claim as new, and desire to secure`by Letters Patent- 1. The metallic harms-tug A, provided with the V-shapc'd openings C, having inclined sides, and the tongues D, adapted to receive the V-shaped block O, formed upon the block N of the trace-strap, said block O held in place by means of the pin upon the spring-lever stop Q, tting in the groove P in thc end of tongue D of the homes-tug, as herein described for the purpose specified.
2. The hams-clip, fastened by bolts to the homes-tug, substantially as herein descrihedand for the purpose' specified.
' 3. The block N upon the trace-strap, when provided with the Vshaped block O, and the spring-lever Q, as
herein described for the purpose specified. JAMES C. COVERT.
