Letters Patent No. 84,998, dated December 15, 1868; 'afntczlatcd December 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-TIES.
111e Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making part of. the same.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID DICK' and OLIVER W. PRESTON, Jr., of Corning, in the county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Ties; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificaa tion, in which- Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of our improved bag-tie as secured in position upon a bag, and fastening the m'outh thereof, and
Figure 2, a view of the same detached from the bag.
The object of our invention lis to provide a simple and convenient device for fastening a bag, bale, or bundle; and to this end, 4
Our improvements consist in pivoting a slotted lever to a clip attached to one end of a suitable chain, and providing the same with proper toes or catches, against which a clamp on the opposite end of the chain bears when the tie is fastened, and providing a spring-snap vconnectin g with a transverse slot, c', at the end farthest from the clip.
' A spring-snap, D, connects a link of the chain tothe lever C, when it is desired to lock the tie in position A clamp, E, is attached to the opposite end of the chain, transversely to its length.
The tie is to be placed round the bag or other article to be fastened, and the clamp E passed through the slot c', the concave side of the lever Gv being turned towards the bag. The clamp E is then passed down the slot c, at the same time bringing the lever round, so as to tighten the chain, until the clamp slips in behind the toes D D, against which it bears, bringing the lever C down upon the chain, with one of the links of which it can be connected by thc spring-snap D, for l the purpose of locking it. The spring-snap also serves as a means of attachment for. tags or labels.
' To unloose the tie, the spring-snap D is unhooked, and the lever C reversed. Care should be taken not to twist the chain.
. What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The arrangement of the curved slotted lever O, with chain A, clamp E, and spring-snap D, all combined and operated as and for the purpose described.'
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own,
DAVID DICK.
