Be it known that I, ELI SWEET, of Whitney's Point,'in the county of Broome, and State of New York, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Sliding Wagon-Tongues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying.

In the use of that class of hay-loaders or elevators which are operated by a sliding movementof the supplementary tongue of the vehicle to whichl they are attached, much diiculty and inconvenience have hitherto been experienced from the swelling ofthe aforesaid sliding tongue which prevents proper movement of the same within the guides in which it is placed. The principal object of this invention is to remedy this very serious. defect, and it consstsna metallic rod placed in a-groove, formed longitudinally in the under side of the wagontongue, and arranged to slide out therefrom, whereby the desired object is elfectually-secured. The inventionl further consists in 'a slotted plate, guard-plate, and spring-catch, so combined with the aforesaid rod and wagonton'gue, that any casual disengagement of the rod while thewagon is being drawn along is e`ectually prevented.

'lo enable others Ato Aunderstand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawingsi A represents .the ordinary tongue of a wagon, which may be attached to such wagon in any Vsuitable Y mannen A deep longitudinal groove or recess, a, i's formed in the under side ofthis tongue A, andextends back nearly to the rear end thereof, as `shown more fully-in fig. 2` Placed'in this groove a is a strong and y stiff rod, B, made preferably of wrought iron, the said rod being supported `and retained in place by means of Vhereinbefore set fortlnthus releasing the sliding rod B, which is then drawn a strap or band,A b, attached to its rearrnost end, and passed around the tongue A, and by-a transverse sup` portngvplate, c, attached to the under side of the forward end of the tongue A.. The forward end of the rod B is constructed with a hook, d; and 'at the rearmost end of the said rod,ipivoted to the band I thereof, is the double-tree e to which the whiie-trees are attached. The upper part of the band b is extended back, soas to form a plate, a*, in which is-a vertical-longitudinal slot, a', into which', when the rod. is pushed back or inward, as required in drawing the wagon from place to place, and as represented `in iig. 2, is lfitted'the spur b of a. spring-catch, C, attached in any appropriate manner to the tongue A; the said spring-catch being` situated above a guard-plate, 0*,"with its spur, 'b, passed downward through a slot in such guard-plate, the latter serving to hold the spur b in proper relation with the slot a of the aforesaid plate a. In orderto limit the upward movement of the spring-catch just mentioned, in withdrawing the spur b thereof from the slot a as hereini after further set forth, a staple, f, is placed astride of and over the same. It is designed to thus raise the springe-atcb through the agency of a cord attached to the forward endy thereof.

'lhe several parts being .in the position shown in fig. 2, andjust herein described, the team or horses are attached tothe wagon in the ordinary manner, except that the hooked end, d, of the rod B, instead ofthe und of the tongue A, is placed in the ring of the neck-yoke, the hooked form of the said end of the rod enabling ity to serve as a hold-back for the tongue. The 4wagon may then bedrawn along in theiordinary manner until it is desired to load the same with hay or other material by means ofafork or other suitable apparatus, worked by a longitudinal movement of therod B, the downward pressure ofthe spring-catch preventing the spur b thereof from joining out or being otherwise accidentally displaced to release the plate al, or, in other words, the rod B. In order to. work the aforesaidelevating-device, then-wagon is stopped, and the springscatch C is raised, as

i forward by the team tothe position shown in red outline in iig'. 1; this forward movement of the rod operating, througha suitable draughtqope, att-ached to or-connected with the roar end of the rod, to elevate the fork, or other device, to lift the hay or other material upon the wagon, which being done,the team is backed to bring the rodnearly to its original position, whereupon the fork or vdevice maybe again loaded. or supplied preparatory to being again raised in the same manner. When it is vrequired to moreA the wagon, the rod B is simply brought quite back to its orig-inni position, on which the spur 6 of the spring-catch passes into the slot a ofthe plate al, and securely holds the rod B against the forward strain or draught exerted upon it in drawing the wagon.

What I claim as my invention, -and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, isv 1, vThe sliding bar B, in combination-with the tongue A, draught-'bar e, und spring-Caton C, when arranged to'operate substantially as andl for the purpose set forth.

2.' The slotted plate a, guard-plate 6*, and spring-catoh C, combined in relation with each other and with thesliding iiodB and tongue A, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
