TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. CARDOT, of Fredonia, Chautauqua county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and improved Draught-Pole for Mowing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters oi ret'erencemarked thereon, in which Figure I is a longitudinal section and elevation of my improved draught-pole; and
Figure 11 is a bottom view showing the under side of my improved pole.
My invention consists in constructing a draught-pole for mowing machines in such manner that the fingerbar and cutters will be raised or lifted from the ground in the act of backing.
A represents the body of the tongue or pole, which may be connected to the machine in a common manner. B is a bar' or rod, which is made to slide in a groove in the under side of the tongue; It has an eye at its rear end for the attachment of the chain 6. O is the hold-back iron, which is made to slide upon the front end of the tongue, and is firmly attached to the forward end of the sliding bar B. D is the pulley or roller attached to the under side of the pole, near therear end thereof, over which the chain 11 passes and connects with the shoe or finger-bar. v i
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the machine is being drawn forward or is at rest, the chain Z), being attached to the shoe at the inner end of the finger-bar, the weight of the finger-bar and shoe will throw the sliding bar 13, and hold-back iron 0 connected with it, forward into the position shown in Fig. I in the drawings, allowing the finger-bar to rest upon the ground, as is required when the machine is to move forward. Now, in operating a mowing machine it is frequently necessary to turn corners, say at right angles, in which case the cutter-bar will be moved backwards before the machine can be again started into the grass or grain; or it is sometimes necessary to back the machine when it becomes clogged, or some similar accident occurs. It is difiicult to accomplish such necessary turning or backing without some contrivancc for raising the finger-bar and cutters from the ground. This difficulty has been overcome in some machines heretofore by an arrangement of levers, or some similar contrivance, operated by the driver of the machine, requiring considerable outlay of strength, and almost constant attention on his part. In my improvement the power exerted by the horses in backing the machine at the same time raises the finger-bar and cutters, thus relieving the driver of the labor'and attention required to operate the old devices, and giving him leisure to attend more closely to the'movements of his team, and insuring that service to be performed at all times by the team. The neck-yoke being attached to the hold-back iron in the ordinary manner, when the machine is backed the neckyoke pulling upon it slides it back upon the pole into the position shown in Fig. II, and with it the sliding rod 13, to which it is attached, thus drawing the chain 6 up over the pulley D, and raising the finger-bar and cutters. When the horses move forward the weight of the shoe and finger-bar will bring them down to the ground, and all the parts into proper position for a forward movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A draught-pole, having a movable push-back iron or sleeve 0 in combination with the sliding rod B, pulley D, and chain 6, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described.
