IMPROVEMBNT'IN TOOLS FOR JBWELLING WATCHES.
die .tlgehule refemh ta in time ttter tant mit limiting mitteilte aan.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:4 Y
Be it known that I, AUGUSTIN T1IOMA,.Sr., of Piqua, in the county of Miami, and State of Ohio, have invented a new andfuseful Improvement in Jewelling Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspe'cification, in which- Figure 1 is asectional viewof a watch-plate with-a'jewel inserted in it, showing the application of the tool employed for closing the bezel and setting the jewel.
Figure 2 isa view of the tool in its handle. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. This invention relates to setting `jewels in watch-plates with a tool which raises and closes back the bezel or burr for securing the jewel in the plate at a single operation with great dispatch and accuracy, instead of using the ordinary pointed burnishing-tool, which requires time and skill to make a good setting.
A represents part of a. watch-plate, and aa jewel, l'itted in the larger endof a taper-hole in the plate in the usual way for setting jewels. B represents the tool employed for raising and closing back upon the jewel the bezel or burr to hold it in place. The toolis a round, hardened steel, cup-shaped point, rwth-e edge or rim around the cup or concave opening in the end being made very sharp for the purpose of cutting into the metal around the jewel, and raising a delicate burr or bezel, which -is donc by -placing the clip c over thejewel ain the plate A, and turning it around in opposite directions witlra gentle pressure. Thebezel thus raised is closed back over the jewelby the conical sides of the cup c bearing upon it at the same operation. The tool `is made of various sizes to lit jewels of different sizes, and the sharp edge or rimv extends outside of the jewel fori-which it is used just enough to' raise and secure a delicate bezel around it. One handle, C, is used for any number of' diiferent-sized tools, which all tit inla socket, d, as shown in fig. 2. Y.
By means of this tool watches are jewelled with much greater facility and accuracy than by the old method.
Having thus described my invention,`what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tool B for closing or setting jewels in watch-plates, consisting of the round, hardened, cup-shaped point c, substantially, as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 17th day of August, 1866.
' AUGUSTIN risoMA, se.
