IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SQUARE AND GAUGE.

TO ALL WHOM IT 'MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, THOMAS C. IIENDRY, ot Union Point, in the county of Green, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Combined Square and Gauge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which willqenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein'r had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. side view of my square and gauge.

The nature of' this invention consists in combining a gauging-device wit-h a common carpenters square.

Annd B are the arms of a square.'b In theshorter arm B is a slot, d, running nearly its whole length, the said slot having V-shaped edges, as shown at fig, 2. A sliding butt, consisting et' two plates a a, held together by a screw, b, fits into the said slot (I, and is movable to und lfro in the slot, the friction of the same being adjusted by the screw b. A platef, having ai point, z', is secured to the square at the junction of the two arms.

The point i can be made the initial point otfmcasurenient on the slotted arm if desired. A similar plate and` point are placed on the opposite side ofthe square at the' same point. ,The plates a a have each a point, t" z", on a line. with the points z' z', and, together with the latter,- serve as a gauge forstriking lines in the ordinary manner. At the extremity of the sletA is an opening, C, by means of which the plates a alare removed from the square, or attached to the same without taking the said plates apart, it ,being only required to loosen them alittle when inserting them again. This improved combination dispenses with the use of the common gauge,`a.nd provides a cheap, convenient, and useful tool.

I am aware that movable peints have been patented, but the points were attached to a. T-square, and were intended only as a substitute for dividers, land were propcrl)v a dra-agliting-instrument.

llavinfnr thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
