TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONOERN:
I Be .it known that I, OB-EN BALDWIN, of the city of Keokuk, county of Leo, and State of Iowa, have invented a new 4and useful Improvement in Washing-Tub Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andfexact dcscriptionfthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the 'letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a perspective View, as from above, showing mylimprovement in order for use.
This .invention has its object in devising and adapting good practical means for ordinary use in washing, giving the assistancemcededin doing the work without many usual disadvantages; and it consists of the several parts, with the arrangements and combinations, which arev made as shown in the drawing and as hereinafter setforth. i
Into an r ordinary wash-tub'or suitable vessel, A, is set an npright shaft, B, which has suitable bearings at the bottom, andis held at the top by the cross-board C, reaching across and resting on the two sides ofthe tub A, and held by the two posts D D', `which could be made to serve also as handles to the tub, being held stationary by the pins E Eor otherwise.v The shaft B bears a beater, F, extending to the side of the tub, and turning freely within it, and rising from the bottom, near the 'top of thetub. This heater F has two faces, G G', expanding apart more or less to the outer end and to the bottom, as if to pr'esent sections of opposite spiral screws, and which are formed of slats, with water spacesl between them, or of any suitable wood or metal. This beater F beats and presses the clothing and material oper-ated upon against a perforated board, H, formed and extending across the side of the tub A, with its top inclined towards the centre, so that the outside lines of the faces G G`of the beater F will be about parallel with the board when in contact. The shaft B and the beater I are turned by the cross-handle I, on the top end of the shaftV B, by the operator turning. it back and forth, striking and squeezing the clothing or material alternately on cach side against the board H, for the object ofcleansing in an approved manner. At the same time the faces Gr G tend to lift and turn the clothing up and over forward,A and at the same time toward the centre. Between the board II and the shaft B is a perforated board, K, which stops the clothing, while permitting the water to gush through and strike and move the clothing on the other side. The board H is held in place by little projections, L, on the sides of the tub, and by the cross-pierce()l on top, and the tub is covered, if wished, by two lid pieces, M, while washing. The whole inside parts of the attachment can bc made to be readilyremovable, so as to leave tho simple tub or vessel A.
vWhat I claim is- A washing-tub attachment, having the contre-shaft B, handle I, cross-piecc C, and the beater F, with its faces G G, to press the clothing against the board H, together with the board K, all arranged as specified.
` OBEN BALDWIN.
