- the action is as follows: When the handle is lifted, the tendency to produce a vacuuxn beneath causes the water to be forced through the perforations of the bottom, thus raising the clothes from the lower ribbed surface, leaving a stratum of water underneath the cloth, and keeping the cloth in contact with the upper ribbed surface until the latter is elevated above the side and end boards, when the water will flow in between thc lid and the clothes.
- the handle When the handle is depressed the cloth is between two strata of water. The upper stratum is-fnreed through the fabric and both strata through the perforations. A firm 'squeeze isgiven Vto the clothes by the two opposing ribbed surfaces. The reciprocating action is continued, alternately' flowing the water against and around the clothes and forcing it through and ⁇ out of them.

4o. W. ALGER, or RICHMOND, VERMONT'.
` Letters-Patent No. 66,2/75, dated July 2, 1867. v
IMPRoveD WASHING MAGHINB.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, O. W. ALGER, of Richmond, Chittenden county, and State of'Vernront, have invented anew andimproved Washing Machine; andI do hereby declare-the following to be a full and exact descrip tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in which the figure is a perspective view.
This consists of two hinged portions, a box with a ribbed bottom, and a. lid with a ribbed under surface. Between the ribs of the box are perforation through which water'passes to and fro, as the lid is raised and depressed. In the drawingsv i A is the frame of the machine, and rests with its .lower end upenthe bottom of the wash-tub which is partly lled with suds, andwith its lower surface against the side'so as to have an inclined position. Theinsidc of the bottom of the box has cleats a a, and rows of holes between the cleats. The upper endB is secured in the cheeks C by the pivoted bar D, and, being hinged therein, is capable of being lowered as seen in red lines. The hinged lid E has a. handle, F, and is capable of motion o'n the pivots G.
The action is as follows: When the handle is lifted, the tendency to produce a vacuuxn beneath causes the water to be forced through the perforations of the bottom, thus raising the clothes from the lower ribbed surface, leaving a stratum of water underneath the cloth, and keeping the cloth in contact with the upper ribbed surface until the latter is elevated above the side and end boards, when the water will flow in between thc lid and the clothes. When the handle is depressed the cloth is between two strata of water. The upper stratum is-fnreed through the fabric and both strata through the perforations. A firm 'squeeze isgiven Vto the clothes by the two opposing ribbed surfaces. The reciprocating action is continued, alternately' flowing the water against and around the clothes and forcing it through and `out of them.
Having described my invention, what I claimas new,`and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
p The arrangement of the box A with ribs and perforations, anfd `the ribbed and hinged lid, operating substantiallyas described. l
` o. W. ALGER.
