have invented a new and improved Washing Machine; 'and do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear,

My invention has forits object to furnish an improvedwashing machine, so constructed and arranged as to wash the clothes rapidly, thoroughly, and'convenently, and without injury to the fabric and' it consists in the combination 'ci' circularslats, circular plates, and breast-beams with each other and with the box of the iuachin e,

in forming` a b ox atloneend of the machine for the attachment of a'wriug'er; and in the combinationof the pivotcd hammer and ivcirrit withfeachrothcr, and with the box of the machine; thewhole being constructed f a -and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.

' .A is the' box of the maehine, the bottom al of which is made dat, the sides a vertical, and the ends as inclined, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. B are circular. slats, placed inthe bottom of the box A, thespaces-between; and beneath 'them acting as reservoirs' to contain the water or suds, so that so great a depth of water above said slats will not'be necessary to thoroughly Wet the clothes being Washed;r C are circular zine plates, extendattached to blocks 'or ribs so that their surfaces maybe in the same circle with the circularslats or ribs B, as

The hammer or beater E is made heavy, and its lower-side or part is slotted, as shown in iig. 2, so that it may-pass more easily through the water. or suds, and need not carry so'much water up with the clothes. The ends of the hammer or beater E are attachedto the arms F, by means of which itispiyoted. to the sides agof themachine or to. a shaft, G, attached-l to said sides.l v The arms E extend 'above-the'pivoting point, and have a weight, H, attached to them at about the same distance from the'pivoting `point as the hammer E. The weight H should beaboutthree-fourths the weight of the said hammer E. The hammer orbeater is operated by a handle or lever, '1, so connected to tho upper side of 'theweight H thatfit may be used both to push and pull, so-that thc'hammer o 'r beater may make lits stroke in both directions. J is 'a box, formed in one ond of the box A, so that a wrin-ger may be conveniently attached td said box, and may remain there while themaohine is being operated. The b oxJ is'connected to the interior of the box A by channels, sothat the waterwrung fromthe clothes may flow back into the said box. K are'movable covers, placed upbn the machine to prevent the water from splashing out"while'the hammer is beingcperated. i i 7 I In using the machine a sufficient quantity of waterand soap is put into the box A,`a part vof the clothes are then putin upon each "side of the beater E, whizh'is'then operated, carryingthe -clothes with it upthe circular plates Gand beating out the water and d irt against the breast-beams D. v As the hammer swings back tho-clothes slidedown the Lcircular plates C, and when they reach and come in contact `with the circular slats or 'ribs B, they are partially turned over so Athat a different part of them may beoperated upon at each stroke of saidhammcr. Tfhe ends'o'f the circularslats B, where they meet Vthe plates '0, may be made a little full so as to facilitate the partial turning'over of the clothes'. A

What I claim as new, and desire to secure'byrLctters Patent,1 is i 1. The combination of the circular slats or ribs B, circular plates C,L and breast-beams D, with cach other and with the box A of the machine, substantially as herein shown and described und for the purpose set forth.

2. The pivotcd hammer E', and weight H, constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the box A, as and for the purpose set forth'.
