Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. BROOKS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
SLIDE FOR SAFETY-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 65,721, dated June 11, 1867.
V plying the safety line or rein to a bridle. Fig.
2 is a side view of the drawslide applied to .the rein. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views,
showing theconstruction of the draw-slide. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.
This invention relates to a new and improved draw-slide, which is designed to be used upon reins which are provided with supplemental lines or reins, for the purpose of enabling a person to exercise control of restive and otherwise unmanageable horses, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. l, I have represented one mode of attaching the safety-rein to the head-gear of a horse, so that, when desired, this rein or line can be drawn tight independently of the ordinary drivingrein, and the animal thus brought under perfect control. The rein or line A and the ordinary drivin g-rein B may be arranged in any other suitable manner which will admit of drawing the bit upward-in the horses mouth, so as to cause him to throw his head upward and backward. The lines A pass through the rein B, so that the former can be moved lengthwise at pleasure by the person driving.
To those ends of the lines A nearest the drivers hands I apply the draw-slides, which allow of the ready grasping of the lines A, and afford means whereby these lines can be conveniently drawn tight. The slide consists of a strong metallic portion, a, through which the iat portion of the rein B passes freely, to whichportion an eye-piece, b, is rigidly applied, for receiving and having fastened to it the end of one of the lines A, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. A ring or handle, c, is secured rigidly to the sliding portion a, which will allow of its being conveniently and firmly held in the hand when it is desired to draw tightly upon the safety line or lines.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have` shown a small hook, e, applied inside of the sliding portion a, the object of which is to catch into any one of the holes which are made through the rein B, and thus arrest the slide ywhen drawn back or tightened at any desired point upon said rein.
By thus constructing the safety-line slides and applying them to the reins it will be seen that they are in no manner in the way while handling the reins, they are neat and compact, and can be quickly and conveniently grasped by the hands when the lines require to be drawn tight.
I am aware that leather straps have been used in conjunction with reins having safetylines applied to them, and therefore I do not claim the use of leather loops or handles constructed in such manner. My improved slides are much more compact and portable than those referred to, and do not require to be adjusted by buckles, nor held constantly in the hands.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metallic slide which is adapted for being attached to the safety-lines A of the reins B, and which is provided with a ring or loop, e, substantially as and for the purposes described. l
.2. The construction of an arresting-hook upon the' sliding portion a, substantially as described.
FRANK W. BROOKS.
