Description
N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPMER WASHINGTON. D C4 Entitled gieten @anni aan@ Letters Patent No. 99,834, dated February 15, 1870.
'AIMPRovnD BRIDLE.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Ptent ,and making -part: of the seme.
To all whom z 't may concern:
Be ,it known that I, MATHEW HAY BUCHANAN, ofthe county ot' Washington, in the State of Virginia have invented a new and improved Bridle-Bit, Curl: and Draw-Rein Combined, the use of which will more eifectually andeasily restrain and control wild `and restive horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a drawing of' the bridle complete,.as it appears on the horses head, and
Figure 2,- a full sized drawing of the bit and curb.
In iig. 2 it will be seen that an ordinary 'snafe-bit is joined in the middle by the ring A, `and the outer ends o f the snaieare fastened loosely to one side of jthe jaws Br The jaws B are square plates of brass, with holes C Vnear their centers, the edges of which holes are raised v another thickness of the plates.
In the slit D the head-stall iastens, and in the slit E the strap to which the halter or lead-strap is attached.
In the ring A another snaie, H, also fastens with..i
the holes C in the jaws B, and are sewed into other rings, G.
this snale the.
. Now by reference to iig. 1 it will be'seen that the draw-reins, having been sewed to the head-'stall as low down as the brow-band, where they should become corded leather, pass through -the rings G on to the hand ofthe rider, and that by drawing these reins the leather pieces F, circling the lower jan, act as a poweiiul` curb, alle plessui'e being so great around the lower jaw of the horse as to give hiln great pain, but beiugjapplied with soft 'material (leather) on the ontside, and a snatie in the mouth, all danger ot' breaking or otherwise injuring his jaw is obviated. At the same time and with the same motion another power ful restraint is added, for the draw-reins in passing through the rings G ot' the curb, draw the bit tightly into the corners ofthe horses month. 'lhus two distinct and powerful restraints are brought to hear on the mouth and jaw of the horse, with but little strength of the rider.
This bit and curb, though powerful at the will of the rider, is easy and light when at'rest Y \Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A new and improved biidle-bit.curb, andi draw-rein, combined as above stated, and in such a manner as with little strength ot the rider to easily and effectually restrain wild and restive horses.
M. H. BUCHANAN.
