JOSHUA C. PRICE, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
Lam-8 Patent No. 63,297, dated llfarch 26, 1867.
IMPROVED BRIDLB-BIT.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA G. PRICE, of New Philadelphia, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon as forming a part of this specification, in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective and Figure 2, a section.
The peculiarity of this invention consists in having movable or sliding levers or sides to the bit, and
attaching the head-stall and reins to said levers, thereby more cfi'ectually retaining control over a vicious or an evil-disposed horse. V
A A represent the two pieces which form the bit, and are joined together in the usual manner, as fully seen in fig. 1. The other ends of pieces A A are provided with holes sufficiently large to allow the levers B B to slide freely through them. Each end of levers B B has a ring attached or formed upon it, as in ordinary bits. To these rings are buckled or secured the head-stall and reins. Thus it will be observed that the bit is a fulcrum on which the levers act. The advantages of thus constructing a bit are obvious. The horseman by drawing upon the rein of the bridle will press the bit with any desired force upon the lower jaw of the animal, forcing his head aloft by drawing his chin under and inward towards his breast, by which the animal will be restrained from rearing or kicking.
In the use of the ordinary bits where the levers and fulcrum are stationary, the horseman is required to increase the actual draught upon the rein as the horse increases the pressure upon the bit, while with mine the constant increase of leverage by the sliding of the levers back and the fulcrum forward will as constantly lessen the necessity of pressure upon the hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The movable or sliding levers or sides B B, when applied substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v JOSHUA 0. PRICE. Witnesses:
DANIEL CHRISTY, I. H. BAMHILL.
