TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, GILBERT B. FRENCH, of Dunbarton, of the county of Merrimac, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful improvement in Car-Couplings; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is aside elevation.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section of it. 7
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken'through its link=pin holding-jaws.
V Figure 4 is a front View; and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the link-pin.'
In such drawings, A denotes the hunter-head or bar, to which the link is to be coupled. This bar is provided with a link-receiving chamber, a. Within the said chamber is an abutment, b, which is supported against one or more springs, 0, arranged between it 'an'd the rear end of the chambein- Fromthe said abutment a' standard, d, extends upward, and is wedge-shaped where it goes between the, two jaws B B, which are arranged on the top of the hunter-bar, and turn on centres, e' 0, arranged at or near their rear ends. These jaws have esprings, ff, applied to them and the bar, such springs being for closing" the jaws upon the link-pin C, which,
when in its highest position, they seize by entering two notches, h it, made in its opposite sides and near its lower end. The said link-pin I also form with a shoulder, i, which, when the pin drops down into the hunter-bar and through the link, will rest on the latter and hold it in a horizontal position. Leading from the jaws down through the hunter-bar is a passage, is, for-the reception ofthepin, such passage being eontinuedup through a cap, Z, which covers the jaws and their springs, and is provided with a chamberfliz, for their reception. When the link-pin is raised, the'jaws, by graspingit within its notches, will hold it in itselevated position. Under these circumstances, if a link be passed into the hunter-bar and against th'e abutment, the latter, with its wedgeshaped-standard, will be driven backward and will force the jaws apart so as to disengage them from the pin, which, by its gravity, willnext fall down into and through the link, so as to connect it with the bar I am aware that spring jaws to catch and hold a substitute for a link have been applied within the main chamber of a draw-bar or hunter-bar, and therefore I do not claim such. I employ the jaws in a separate cham her, a, for supporting the'link-pin, as described; and I also employ the spring abutment and its wedge-shaped standard for opening the jaws, the same enabling nie to use a common open link. Therefore I What I claim as my invention or improvement, is, the arrangement of the spring jaws,.th c spring abutment, and the wedged standard, together and with thebunte'r-bar and its pin passage, as set-forthh GILBERT B. FRENCH.
