I IMPROVED GAR-COUPLING.
fiilge Stigmata lftftttth tn it tips? itcttuit that at making part at flge time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
.Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CUMnfc, of Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful improvement in Automatic Car-Couplings; and I do h oreb declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 2 is a perspective \"iew; and
Figure 3 is a plan of the shackle-bar.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is the draw-head, having a mouth with four converging sides, f'orming'a throat, through which the shacklebar "head passes into the chamber behind the same. In this chamber is hung the hinged piece B, the form of which is shown in fig. 1. This is in the general form of the base and hypothenuse. of a right angled triangle; but the side forming the hypothen'use is bent so as to form a recess at B,-with parallel sides, to hold the head of the shackle-bar.- This'piece 13 is hinged to the base of the stirrup .C, the stems of which rise throughholcs in the top of the draw-head, and are united by a cross-piece resting upon a spring, E, which is staunch enough to sustain the weight of all the parts, and may be of any convenient form. The bottom of the draw-head below the piece 13 is open; and a slot is cut through the lower side of the draw-head at A Longitudinal slots are cut in the head of the shackle-bar I), so that it may be used in connection with the ordinary draw-head and pin. As the cars come in contact on approaching, the shackle-bar projecting from one draw-head will be directed by the inclined sides of the mouth A. Passing through the throat it will enter the recess 13 at the base of the piece 13. When the shackle-bar is drawn upon, its shoulders will, bear against the back part of the mouth of the draw-head on each side of the slot A Whenit is dcsired'to disengage the shackle-bar it is only necessar; to press down the stirrup C, thereby passing the lower side of the piece 13, and with it the shackle-bar, below the bottom of the draw-head, and disengaging the latter, thus uncoupling the ears. Should the cars be thrown from the track they would disengage themselves. Thestirrup mar be operated, by any convenient arrangement of rods or levers, from the top or other part of a carJ i What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,- v
1. The combination, in an automatic car-coupling, of the draw-mead A, hinged piece B, stirrup O, and spring supporting the same, with the shackle-bar D, said parts being respectively constructed and arranged substantially as set forth. i i
2. The draw-head A, when constructed with an opening through its lower side A, for the escape of the shackle-bar, substantially as described. I v i 3. The hinged piece 13, when constructed and used in combination with a draw-head and shackle-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
