GAR-COUPLING.
@le Silente retenu to in linie ieitu's lziiuit nu mating ont of lip nini-f o u o n y.... TO ALL WIIOM I'I MAY CONCERN: l
, Be it known tha-t I, A. IIILLMAN, of Davenport, in the county of Devonshire, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Coupling; aid I de hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exnet description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art `to make and use the saine, reference being)r had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this speciention, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved car-coupling, attached to cars.
Figure 22 is a detail sectional View of the sinne, taken through the lino fr fc, tig. 1.
Similnr letters et reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention hns for its object to furnish an improved cnr-coupling, simple, strong, und reliable in construction, not liable to get out of order, which shall be self-coupling, and which may be readily attached to an ordinary draw-bnr und bumper-head; und it consists in the coupling-box; in the coupling-link having two pins projecting downward; in formirnf:r holes or slots in the lower port of the coupling-box for the reception of the link-pins; inthe combination ot' the slotted wedge-shaped adjusting-block with the coupling-link, and in the combination and arrangement of the vcoupling-box, spring, pivoted coupling-bar, uncouplingrod, and leverhandles with ench other; the whole beinfcr constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B are the contiguous ends of two ears coupled with my improvcdicoupling. C are the ordinary draught-bars and bumper-hends, which nre 'attached to the cars in the ordinary manner. D nre the boxes of the coupling, upon the upper side of which is formed a flange, cZ, fitting over one or both the draught-bars C, to which the box is secured by bolts passing through the said flange, through the draughbbar or bars, and through the upper side of the said box, the said belts being secured in place by nuts, keys, or in any other convenient manner. E are braces, the lower ends of which crc securely belted to the sides of the coupling-box 1), and
` their upper ends to the drangl1tbar, so as to hold the said boxes D securely in place. Ilhe connection between the diauglxt-li;1rs C and the coupling-boxes I) may be stilli'urt-her strengthened by the ordinary coupling-pins F, which poss down' through the upper part of the boxes D, as Vshown in iig. 1. G nrc the coupling-bars, the upper ends of which are pivoted to ears or projections d2, formed upon or att-ached to the rear side ofthe boxes D, by means ofthe uiicouplingsiiui`t or rod II, to which they ure securely attached, ond which pass through the snid cors or projections ci". '.lo the outer ends ofthe nnconpling-rod I-I are attached lever-handles I, by means of which. the curs tney be uneoupled from the side et' the track or from the platform of the station; or, it" desired, o oord may be attached to the lever-handles I end carried up to the top or other desired part of the car, for convenience in uneoupling. The coupling-bars G are made with a shoulder upon the rear side et' their lower ends to restupon the end of the coupling-link, and hold it in a horizontal position, ready for coupling,` the ears when they nrorun together. J is a spring, which is secured to the couplingbar G or to the uncoupling-rod II in such o position that its free end will vrest. or strike against the draught-bur C and prevent the said couplingA bars G from being thrown out of the coupling-link by the jarring of the cars. The spring J also insures the coupling-bars being always in position to drop into the link and couple the curs when they 'r1-rerun together. lhe lower sides of the boxe-s1) are mode inclined, so as to guide the coupling-link into proper position for coup ling, und have two holesor slots formed in vthorn to receive the pins luttachcd to the coupling-link, to prevent the said link from being driven into the box D when the cars are run together: Ii is the coupling-link, the rear ond of which has o. notch formed in it, into which the lower end of the coupling-bar G tits, and two pins, k', attached to its lower side, which enter the holes or slots in the lower sido of the boxes D, and which prevent the linl'` K from being driven too for into the seid boxes when the cnrs are run together to be coupled. L is n wedge-shaped block, which is secured to the rear end of the link K by a bolt and thumbmut, said bolt passing through a. hole in the rear end of the said link, and through o. slot-in the said block. 'lhc block L is secured to the end ofthe link K in such a. position that it may pass beneath und rest against the shoulder formed upon the lower part ofthe bur G, so that it may be adjusted to hold the link in a. horizontal position, Should-the dronghtdm be accidentally bent downward, or bc otherwise thrown out of e horizont-:1l position. In the ease of high chars the boxes may be made deeper, so as to bring high and low cars practically to the sanne level; or the links K may be bent in the same way as is now donc to couple high and low curs.
By this construction, the ordinary bumper-heads not being removed, the old coupling` is not disturbed, so that a. car Without my improved coupling` can bo readily coupled with one to which my improved coupling has been vattached. In case the drow-bars C are slotted in the renr of the pin F, the projections (Z2 of the box D muy lbe placed above the said draw-bnr, allowing the coupling-bor G :und spring J to work up and down through said slot. In this case, ifdesired, the spring J muy be secured to the draw-bnr C, so as to :ict upon the head of the coupling-bar G.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The coupling-boxes D, construct-ed as described, und secured te the draughbbnr or bars C by the flange (Z1 and braces E, substantially :1s and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The coupling-link K, constructed as herein shown und described, und having two ilow'nemily-projecting pins 7c attached to its lower side, in combination with the coupling-box, having perforations for the reception ofthe pins k ofthe link K, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. Y
3. 1lhe combination of thel slotted Wedge-shaped adjusting-block L with the coupling-link K, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose sctforth.
4. The combination and arrangement of the coupling-box D, spring J, pivoted`eoupling-bar G, uneouplingrod H, and lever-handles I with each other nd with the draugh'ebar C, substantially as herein shown :ind described, and for the purposeset forth. y
