JOHN S. BIRCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 61,600, dated January 29, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENDANTS FOB. WATCHES.
v @112 strata marsh in in flgtst saw; Eijthltt'ttltt mating part at its sane.
TO ALIi WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be'it k nown that 1, JOHN S. BIRCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Watch-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 representsa watch-case open, to which my improvement has been attached.
Figure 2 represents a modification of my improvement.
Figure represents another modification of the same. I
It is asserted by the police, and by those conversant with the matter, that in a very large proportion of the cases in which watches are stolen from the pockets of their owners, the watchis separated from the guard-chain by twisting the guard-ring from its stem. To prevent this I swivel the guard-ring to the case, so that it will be impossible for the pickpocket to twist it oh", and thus separate the watch from the guard-chain. A s, however, it is now customary to make all valuable watches with hunting cases, requiring a spring stop or pusher passing through the knob or shank to permit the opening of the case, when desired, the mere swivelling of the bow to the case, as has been l 1eretofore proposed, would be of little avail, because such an invention could not he applied to the better class of watches. My invention consists, first, in swivelling the bow upon a hollow stem or pivot, through which is passed the spring-stop or pusher for releasing the dial cover; second, in constructing the bow in the form of a continuous ring, which, passing cccentrically through the aforesaid pivot, is adapted to move with perfect freedom, circumferentially as well as laterally; third, in combining with a bow, of either the common or improved form, a secondary swivel bow, to which the guard may be attached, so as to afford additional security by still retaining connection between the watch and guard in the event of the primarybow being detached. v
A represents a watch-case, B the guard-ring, and C the stem of the guard ring. The stem 0 is secured to a pin, D, formed upon or attached to the case A in such a way that the said stem may be free to turn upon the said pin, but cannot be drawn therefrom. The pin D may be perforated longitudinally, or made hollow, for the passage of thepin Ethat operates the spring catch by which the case is heldshut, as shown in fig. 1. The hole for the guard-ring B is, by preference, made through the side of the head of the stem' 0, as shown in fig. 2, or' the ring 13 may be sprung into sockets formed in the sides of the head of the stern C, and secured in place by a screw-pin, F, passing through the ends of the ring 13 and through the head of the stem C at the side of the pin D, as shown in fig. 3. In thccase of watches already provided with a guard-ring and rigid stem, a small ring may be swivclled to the case, at the side of the ordinary guard-ring, as shown at G, fig. 1, and the guard-chain passcd through the ordinary guard-ring, and secured to the swivclled ring G, so that, should the ordinary guard-ring be twisted off, the watch will still be secured to the guard-chain by the small swivelled guardring Gr,'which it will be impossible to twist oif.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the hollow stcm D, swivel 0, .ring Bpan'd spring-stop or pusher E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. V
2. The continuous revolving ring 13, (fig. 2,) in combination with the swivel C, as and for the purpose specified. V
3. Ihe secondary swivel-bow G, in combination with the guard-bow and handle of a Watch, to afiord an additional attachment for the guard, as explained.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 7th day of January, 1867.
r J. S. BIRCH.
