TO AL'L WHOM IT MAY CON CERN Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAMS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Attachment to Watch-Pockets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
The present invention relates to an attachment to watch-pockets of wearing apparel, the object of which is to prevent the abstraction or removal of the watch carried in such pocket from the same, without the knowledge and 'consent of the wearer or owner, thereby obviating all possibility of the watch being stolen when the person 'is wearing it, the said safety-attachment being of such a nature and construction 'as to be easily manipulated by the wearer, and to oifer no impediment to the free removal of the watch by such person. In the accompanying plate of drawings my. improved attachment is illustrated- A Figure 1 being a front view of the same, showing it in connection with a pocket and watch-ease, both of the 4latter being 4represented in red lines, and
Figure 2 a plan or top view of iig. 1, with the pocket shown by red lines in horizontal cross-section, as well as a-portion of the safety-attachment. i
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents my improved attachment. This attachment consists o f a holder, B, for the pendant of a watch-case, made of a ring-shape, (nearly a complete circle,) with its back portion or side B2 continuous, terminating at each end in a short stem,D, extending in the same line or direction with each other, and its front portion, or side E, formed of two jaws F and G, nearly meeting at their outer ends. Oneof these jaws, F, is hinged to the main or continuous portion B of the holder, so as to swing in or toward the same, it :being held out in the position shown in fig. 2, by means `'of a bent or other suitable spring properly connected to ,A it therefor. The other jaw G is attached or secured to, or forms la part of, .a small stem, b, arranged to slide or 1move in and through one of the extension-arms or stems D, projecting therefrom at its outer end, a spiral or coiled spring, c, being suitably arranged, in connection with `the said stem, within the extension-arm, to operate upon the jaw G in such a manner as to hold it closed, or to close it, after havingtbeen opened by sliding it, when the pressure or force is released by which it was opened. On the extension-arms D of the holder, buttons I are formed, one to each arm, by which the attachmentA is fastened to and in a watch-pocket upon its back or rear side. y
With an attachment, A, constructed as above described, and fastened to and in a watch-pocket, if desired to secure a'watch in it, it is only necessary to bring the pendant of the watch-case to bear against the springjaw F with suicient pressure to force the same inward, and thus allow the watch-pendant to pass into the rings shaped holder B, where, by the then closing of thc said jaw, it is secured, therebyprev-enting the removal or detachment of the watch therefrom by any force or 'power brought to bear upon it in an upward direction, as is obvious without any further explanation, the removal of the watch from the pocket, and its detachment from the holder B, being accomplished by so sliding the jawG as to open the holder suihciently to allow the pendant to be drawn from it. A For convenience in operating the attachment A, to remove the watch from the lpocket, I deemit desirable to extend the stem b through one side of the watch-pocket a short distance, and to provide its outer end with a suitable catch for operating it with the fingers of the hand. i
lFrom the above description of my improved safety-attachment for watch-pockets itis plainlyobvious that, k, while a watch can be removed with facility by the owner or wearer, all attempts to abstract it,without' the knowledge or consent of the wearer, are frustrated, as it cannot be accomplished without tearing away the 'garment, or properly opening the holder, in doing either of which the wearer is warned in time to prevent the loss ofthe watch, the attachment thereby operating as a complete and perfect safeguard against thieves, pickpockets, and other similar charactersor persons.
In lieu of securing the attachment A to the pocket by buttons, as has been described, it may be fastened in other and various ways, as, for instance, by sewing, stitching, riveting, eta, but I deem it best to use such a fastening as will allow the` attachment to be readily removed when so desired, although I wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to any onepurticular mode of fastening therefor.
. Ineouclusion, it may-be here remarked that, in addition to the safety from theft obtained for o, watch by my improved attachment, it also serves to hold the watch inthe pocket, if the-garment should be accidentally or carelessly so thrown or laid down that the watch would drop out of the pocket were it not so held,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The safety-attachment for watch-pockets herein described, the sume consisting of the holder B, having two jaws F und G, the one swinging upon a hinge-joint und held in proper position byespring. and the other moving in e sleeve in port D, and actuated by a spiral spring, the whole arranged and combined to operate substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
