Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. C. BEDELL, OF RED BANK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED TOOL FOR TRIMMING BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specitication forming part of LettersPatent No. 53,558, dated April 3, 1866; antedated March 30, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, S. C. BEDELL, of Red Bank, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved rlool for Trimming Boot and Shoe Heels 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifica-tion, in which- Figure 1 is a "iew ot' the tool showing it as applied to a boot-heel. Fig. 2 is a cent-ral section taken in the direction of its length, or in the plane of the line :r x, Fig. l; and Fig 3 a view ofthe lower end of the tool.
rIbis invention relates to anew tool especially adapted and intended to be used for trimming of boot and shoe heels; and it consists in inserting or arranging within the lower end or shank of' a suitable-shaped handle a knife or cutter-blade,
in such a Ina-nner that it can be adjusted to any height or thickness of heel, thelower portion of the said shank end projecting sut'- iiciently below the knife or cutter to serve as a guide by moving against and upon the bottom of the heel when the tool is used to trim its edge or sides.
a. a in the drawings represent the handle of the tool, made of the proper shape and size so that it can be nicely and tightly grasped by the hand, the lower portion or shank, b, ot' which is cut out, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, in which is inserted and placed a frame, c, made of a bent or curved shape, having a knife or cutterblade, d, arranged as in ordinary spokeshaves, so called.
To use the tool, the cutter-frame is first adjusted within the shank of the handle so as to project therefrom either more or less, accordto the height or thickness of the heel which is to be shaved or trimmed, when the clamp is tightened, and the handle of the tool grasped by the hand and its cutterblade brought against the edge ot the heel, the extreme end lof the shank bearing against its lower or treading surface, as plainly seen in Fig. 2, the tool then being drawn around and about the heel, trimming and shaving it by its cutter, as is obvious without further explanations.
The curved shape of the cutter-stock and frame enables the proper shape and curve to be given to the sides of the heel, and it is obvious that this can be varied according to a persons fancy or taste.
The cutter may be also secured in the tool in various ways other than described, and also, in lieu of making its stock adjustable it can be made fixed so far as adapting it to the varying heights of heels but I deem it best to have it made adjustable, as one tool then serves more generally the purpose for which it is to be used.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tool for trimming boot or shoe heels having the general construction and arrangement herein described, and either with or without an adjustable cutter-stock, operated as specitied.
The above specification ot' my invention signed by me this 25th day of August, 1865.
S. C. BEDELL.
