Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN NEWMAN, OF UNADILLA, NEV YORK.
IMPROVED EDGE-PLANE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,973, dated May 30, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN NEWMAN, of Unadilla, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Edge-Planes for Dressing off the Edges of the Soles of Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views, showing the principal parts. Fig. 3 is a View showing the form of the knife or cutting blade.
The nature of my invention consists of a hand-tool made of brass, iron, or any other suitable material, so constructed that it will make a convenient tool for the use of shoemakers in paring or dressing the edges of the soles of boots and shoes in such a manner that the work is done more expeditiously without the liability of cutting or injuring the upper part of the boot or shoe, as is the case when done with the ordinary knife or some of the kinds of edge-planes in common use, and is more fully explained as follows:
B represents a shank-piece attached to the handle H, on which are a lip or guard, c, and the shoulder or bearing I. The knife or blade stock A is attached to the shank-piece B by means of the set-screw G in such a manner that the knife-stock A can be moved up or down for the `purpose of properly adjusting the edge of the knife in such a manner that the tool will cut very light or a heavy shaving, as
desired.
D is the knife, sliding in grooves inthe knifestock A, as shown at e e.
The operation of this edge-plane is as follows: In Fig. l the lip or guard c on the shoulder I of the shank-piece B is made to run between the uppers of the boot or shoe and the soles in the crease or channel formed at junction of the soles and the uppers, which guides the edge-plane and allows the knife to cut clean up to inner edge of the sole, and at the same time guards the knife from cutting or injuring the uppers, and also admits of the knife paring down or dressing any thickness of sole without adjustment or a sole of variable thickness at the same operation. The knife D is so made that its cutting-edge is set diagonal for the purpose of producing a drawing or diagonal cut, which has the effect to make a smoother cut and much easier to operate. The knife is secured in the stock A, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of the set-screw F, which presses the knife against the grooves e e.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The construction of an edge-plane with the guard c and the diagonal knife D, in combination with the stock A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
MARTIN NEWMAN. Witnesses: l
S. H. FANCHER, C. G. SHAW.
The knife D is se- `cured by means of the set-screw F.
