Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,966, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, CHAs. C. E. SCHWARTZ, of Hamburg, noW residing in Philadelphia., in the county ot' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Nail- Gntting Instrument 5 andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and -eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of novel mechanism, full described hereinafter, for cutting finger and toe nails and dressing the same.
In order to enable skilled mechanics to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, Which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan View of the top. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the bottom, and Fig. 3 is a side vlew.
A is a templet-plate, having in it the circular-shaped opening a and the straight opening or guide b.
B is a knife-blade sliding ou the face of the plate A, and held in place by the guiding-strap c and the set-screw cl, sliding in the opening I). The knife-blade is doubleedged and pointed for cutting' with either the right or left hand and for cleaning the nails.
lIhe extremity C of the plate A is made semicircular and its edge beveled, and is for detaching the skin of the finger or toe from the base of the nail.
The knife-blade is made sliding, that all portions of its euttingedges may be used.
The edges g of the plate A, between the handles ff, are serrated or cut, and serve as files to remove the Wire edges that may be left on the nails after-cutting.
To use my invention, the nail is inserted into the circular opening a., the plate A bearing on the finger or toe and preventing the knifeblade B from cutting the skin or ilesh. The blade Bis held iirmly into the nail and pressed along it, cutting an even and regular shave.
l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The plate A, the circular-shaped opening a, and the straight opening or guide b, substantially as specified and set forth.
2. The combination of the plate A, the circular-shaped opening a, the straight opening b, the sliding knife B, and set-screw d, and the serrated edges or files e, as specified and described.
