Imagine stepping into a world where every interaction is not just seen, but heard. Monument Valley 3, the latest installment from ustwo games, transforms every move you make into a living soundscape, creating an immersive experience that goes beyond the visual. Available now for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, this puzzle game is captivating players with its innovative use of sound design. Instead of scoring the game with one overarching musical theme, Audio Director Todd Baker and co-composer Lucie Treacher approached each level as a self-contained sound installation. This allowed them to tailor the sonic experience to the emotion, visual design, and narrative beats of each environment. The result is a rich, multicultural tapestry of sound that enhances the game's narrative, incorporating global musical influences like the Bansuri, Gamelan, and Kora. Because the game’s tactile nature was also key to the audio experience, collaboration with the level designers and narrative was key. Together, they wove sound into the narrative arcs, spatial design, and even the puzzles themselves. One example is a level inspired by paper and origami. Visually, it unfolds like a print coming to life, with the music feeling handmade as well. The team used crinkling paper textures, lo-fi tape hiss, and analogue synths to create an intimate, tactile feel that matched the level’s delicate visual aesthetic.
