  • Exciting update from Jim Dantzler! 👏

I'm excited to share that I recently started a new role as Director of Design Excellence at Amazon. In this role, I lead the Amazon Design Excellence program, a center of excellence focused on elevating design craft and practice while helping the global Amazon design community transition from legacy design to AI-powered tools, workflows, and generative experiences.

  • What does design leadership look like in the age of AI? For Hector Ouilhet, Head of AWS Applied AI Design at Amazon, it’s not about chasing efficiency—it’s about deepening humanity. At Amazon’s recent Design Open House, Hector shared how his global perspective, creative curiosity, and obsession with joy shape the way he leads teams to build meaningful, human-centered products. From tracking smiles to sketching digital postcards, his approach reminds us that the future isn’t just faster, it’s more human. The way Hector showed up embodied something many attendees felt throughout the day: “a nascent design culture that felt fresh, vibrant, and full of possibility.” Hector shared more about his leadership philosophy and creative process in a recent article written by Matt McCue: https://lnkd.in/gike6vDd Learn more about career opportunities at Amazon here: https://lnkd.in/gXfMMC4j #hiring #design #Amazon

UX Research Leader, Amazon, Alexa+ | Generative AI, Inclusive Research

Grateful to have shared my reflections on driving AI innovation at the Amazon Research Summit in discussion with UX Research leaders, Seonaid Chappell, Bennett Hornbostel, and Steve Herbst, moderated by Niketa Jhaveri. I shared our team's approach to three key challenges in AI research on building Alexa+: balancing speed with rigor, maximizing research impact, and building a culture of curiosity. We start with customer needs and work backwards. Our research, product, and design teams work closely together, with the goal of speaking with one voice of the customer. When it comes to impact, we found that directly connecting user insights to product decisions makes the biggest difference, especially when we don't focus only on identifying problems—but creating moments of delight that could change people's lives. Our regular UX insights meetings with cross-area researchers have become a space where researchers build on each other's findings, tackle common challenges together, and think long-term about where we're headed. And if I could advise my younger self in this fast-changing field it would be: Try everything, but stay focused on what's meaningful to you. Each experience peels back another layer, bringing you closer to your core purpose. Big thanks to Linnea Hagen and Niketa Jhaveri for organizing this event, by researchers for the research community! #AIResearch #uxresearch #amazondesign #leadership #lnnovation

Design leader Anushree Jain explains how she leads design work that reaches millions—without losing sight of the people it’s built for. Check out her strategies: 1️⃣ Lead with real impact. “When a stranger asks what I do, I tell them: I create innovative products and user experiences that solve real problems—at a scale that reaches millions.” It’s not about features—it’s about outcomes. 2️⃣ Design isn’t just execution—it’s vision. Anushree designs across digital and physical touchpoints to create holistic experiences from concept to scale, recently she helped launch Amazon’s new grocery subscription experience. “We designed for a wide spectrum of users—from loyal customers to new ones unfamiliar with Amazon’s grocery services. It was about simplifying choice, enhancing convenience, and deploying emerging technology with accessible solutions that feel human and personalized” 3️⃣ Strategic designers know when to zoom in—and out. “My superpower is seeing patterns from both the ten-foot view and the one-foot view. That means making sense of complex systems while also catching the small details that shape great experiences.” 4️⃣ The roadmap is more than a plan—it’s a story. Anushree recently spoke at Amazon's design event, encouraging teams to rethink planning: “Roadmaps shouldn’t be delivery checklists. They should tell a story of user impact and strategic alignment. The best ones are built through co-creation—and they help teams move with clarity and shared purpose.” 5️⃣ Design thrives on collaboration. “My favorite tool? Workshops. Getting diverse people in a room, using design frameworks to unlock solutions together—that’s where the real magic happens.” 6️⃣ Creativity needs recharging. Outside of work, Anushree finds inspiration through pottery and music—hands-on, expressive outlets that recharge her creativity. Anushree’s advice to other designers? “Get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. Ask why. Tell stories. Design can—and should—shape direction, not just polish execution.” ⸻ Check out opportunities to work with Anushree in Amazon's Design community here. ➡️ https://amzn.to/44MQdWg #Amazon #design #hiring #careergrowth

  • Alex Mejias manages a global team of technologists and designers in Amazon Ads. He recently celebrated his 4 year Amaversary. Check out his story! 🎤 How did you get into design? Traditional education was a bit of a rollercoaster for me—I struggled in subjects like history and math during high school. However, I always knew that my creativity, artistic abilities, and love of computers would help me find my path. Attending the Savannah College of Art and Design solidified my future in design. Since then, I've oscillated between technical and design roles as both an individual contributor and manager. I get bored quickly, so being a hybrid leader keeps me engaged and on my toes. 🎤 How does Amazon Design surprise you? Given its scale, it's remarkable that I, an individual in a unique tech role, feel connected to a UX designer working on the opposite end of the business in distribution centers or satellite communications. Our design community feels oddly cozy despite its massive size. 🎤 How do you express yourself at work? I'm very outspoken about my love of outer space and my firm belief that we're not alone in the universe. I've given a few lighthearted and humorous presentations about fascinating UFO sightings, and I love stepping outside everyday norms to chat with colleagues about the strangest theories we can think of. 🎤 What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned in your career? A director at Amazon once told me, "Careers are long." I think about that a lot, and I've learned not to overthink where I am or what I could be doing professionally. There's always room for the next thing. As a follow-up, I've learned to avoid unnatural things to achieve goals or make a metric green. I'm okay with failure as a catalyst for learning. 🎤 What inspires you? My family inspires me deeply. My dad's upbringing was incredibly challenging—his father passed away when he was just 12, and his mom was in her early twenties at that time. They lived in poverty for most of his life, yet he persevered and chose an unlikely career path. Both of my parents became successful dog trainers and business owners. I have no earthly clue how they managed to raise four rambunctious kids while running a business, but I often think about their resilience and dedication to put things in perspective when I'm feeling overwhelmed. 🎤 What do you do after work? After work, I'm a dad first—assembling puzzles and drawing with my three daughters. When they're asleep, I'm a Dungeons & Dragons player and an all-around huge sci-fi and fantasy nerd. Most recently, I caught up with the latest season of Vox Machina on Prime Video. 🎤 What advice do you have for designers? Build it—the first step is the hardest. -- Amazon Design is hiring.
