Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence: Potter St., between Freeborn St. and School St., alternating one-way traffic for survey work, Mon., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Providence: I-195 East and West, at the deck of the Washington Bridge, up to two lanes closed for bridge preservation work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: I-195 East and West, over the Washington Bridge, brief alternating lane closures for WIM maintenance, Sun. night, 10 p.m. – 1 a.m.

Providence: Route 1A on-ramp to I-195 East, alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Tues. –Thurs., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Providence: Starting Sun. night (Nov. 16) through Tues. night (Nov. 18), from 8 p.m. – 6 a.m., RIDOT is scheduled to close the two right lanes on I-195 West over the Providence River Bridge. One lane will close at 8 p.m., and the second and the on-ramp from I-195 West to I-95 North, starting at 10 p.m. for pavement repairs. On Wed. and Thurs. nights (Nov. 19 and 20), the left lane will be closed, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour. Learn more.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: I-95 North at Exit 37BCD interchange, various ramps will be temporarily closed and reopened as needed for barrier painting and bridge work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: I-95, from Exit 37A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures for striping and barrier painting, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston: All travel lanes on I-95 North and South at Route 10 have shifted to the right through 2026.

Providence: All travel lanes are shifted to the right on I-95 North, between the Rte. 10/Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 33) and the Thurbers Ave. off-ramp (Exit 35), for replacement of the Broad and Eddy St. Bridges in Providence through 2027. Learn more.

Providence: I-95 at Eddy Street, all lanes are narrowed and shifted to the left on I-95 North and South at this overpass, located near the Thurbers Ave. (Exit 35) interchange for bridge work until further notice.

Extended Weekend Closures

Providence: Beginning Fri. night (Nov. 14) at 8 p.m. through Mon. (Nov. 17) at 5 a.m., we will close two lanes in both directions on I-95 for the decommissioning of a bridge over an inactive rail line between Cadillac Dr. and the Roger Williams Park Zoo property. Expect delays and seek alternate routes. Learn more.

Warwick/West Warwick/East Greenwich: Starting on Fri. night (Nov. 14) at 9 p.m., we will continue shifting lanes on I-95 North after Exit 24B (Route 2 North) and Route 4 South on the ramp from I-95 South to Exit 9 (Division Street) to create work zones for RIDOT's Rte. 4 "Missing Move" project. Temporary Ramp Closures

Johnston: I-295 South to Exit 7 will be temporarily closed for brush cutting, Mon. night, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Johnston: Plainfield Pk. on-ramp to I-295 South will be temporarily closed for brush cutting, Wed. night, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.

West Warwick: I-95 South Exit 24A off-ramp to Rte. 2 (quaker Ln.) will be temporarily closed for barrier installation, Tues. night, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

Providence: I-95 North, from Exit 36B to Exit 37B, alternating double lane closures for a bridge inspection, Wed. night, 9 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. Lanes will also be shifted on I-95 North Exit 37A, and the I-95 South on-ramp from Rte. 6 East.

Providence/Cranston: I-95, from Park Ave. to Thurbers Ave., alternating lane closures for bridge demolition/construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Warwick: I-95 North, at the East Ave. overpass, alternating lane closures for crane demobilization, Sun. night, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.

West Warwick: I-95 South on-ramp from Rte. 2 South (Quaker Ln.), left shoulder closed with lanes narrowed for barrier installation, Tues. and Wed. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

West Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 North in the vicinity of Rte. 2 and Rte. 4, alternating lane closures to implement a traffic shift, Fri. and Sat. nights (Nov. 14 and 15), 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. All lanes shift to the left.

West Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 North in the vicinity of Rte. 2 and Rte. 4, left lane closed for barrier installation, Mon. night, and alternating lane closures for striping, Tues. and Wed. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

West Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 South in the vicinity of Rte. 4 South Exit 24B and Rte. 2 (Quaker Ln.), alternating lane closures for striping, Tues. and Wed. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Warwick: The on-ramp to I-95 North from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) will be closed through the fall. Follow signed detour.

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North and South just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 service roads, between Exits 8A and 8C will be temporarily closed to shift lanes, Fri. night, (Nov. 14) 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour

Lincoln: I-295 between Exit 18A and Exit 18B, alternating lane closures for guardrail installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

North Smithfield: The west side of Sayles Hill Rd., from Rte. 146 to Iron Mine Hill Rd. will be closed for road construction, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Follow signed detour.

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: A new traffic pattern with travel lanes going from two to one in each direction on Route 2 (New London Avenue) at the Route 37 overpass is in place through November for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston: Travel lanes are reduced from three to two and are shifted to the right on a section of Rte. 37 East over Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, from Exit 2B (I-95 North) and Exit 3A (Route 1/Post Road North) in Warwick, for bridge replacement. Learn more.

Cranston: I-295 North on-ramp from Rte. 37 West Exit 1B will be temporarily closed for guardrail installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Cranston: I-295 South in the vicinity of Rte. 37, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: Rte. 146 North at Mineral Spring off-ramp will be temporarily closed for brush cutting, Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

New Traffic Patterns

Providence/Cranston: Beginning Fri. night (Nov. 21) at 9 p.m., RIDOT will shift traffic onto a portion of a newly constructed bridge carrying Rte. 10 over Elmwood Ave. in Providence. During this transition, Route 10 South will be detoured onto Elmwood Ave. A detour will be posted to Park Ave. Learn more.
