This project will replace three deficient or near-to-deficient bridges close to the Route 4 corridor on the East Greenwich/North Kingstown line. Where possible, RIDOT is using accelerated bridge construction methods to reduce the duration of these projects and overall impact to motorists. RIDOT also is employing block-style foundations that can be erected under the existing bridges while RIDOT conducts other work in preparation for demolition of old bridge structures. These blocks are less costly to build than traditional footings, but are just as durable and effective. These foundations are often located closer to the road, saving considerable cost in steel as compared to the older design with longer spans over non-road areas. In addition to construction savings, there are savings with operations and maintenance with a shorter span.

Next week at this project, we need to close Route 4, from Exit 7 to Exit 5, to demolish the existing steel beams over Route 4 at the South County Trail Bridge, Sunday night (Route 4 North) and Monday and Tuesday nights (Route 4 South) from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Alternating lane closures will also take place at the South County Trail Bridge on Route 4 North, from Exit 5 to Exit 7, Tuesday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for bridge demolition work. We also plan to install formwork for the bridge deck at the Frenchtown Road Bridge, requiring alternating lane closures in both directions of Route 4, from Exit 5 through Exit 7, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The right lane along Route 403 East, from Route 4 to Exit 2, will be closed Sunday-Friday (November 21) nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for work at the Devil's Foot Road Bridge. Please follow signed detours during all closures. |
