A Wild Coastline and Even Wilder Sealife
Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laidback Monterey is set on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some ex-canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.
The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.
South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.
Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.
Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.

Monterey is a great little city.
Monterey is a great little city. All the restaurants we ate were great and close by. Carmel Beach was beautiful. We were graced by the nice warm sun during the morning and up to about 3pm. Sardine Factory, Krua Thai, Wave Street Cafe, The Butter House in Seaside was excellent. Took the 17 mile drive. As visitors we paid $12.50 entrance fee. Which goes towards restaurants on the 17 mile drive. We used it at the Hay's. The view was beautiful. Lot's of seafood restaurants at the Fisherman's Wharf. My family and I, including my wife and young daughter, had a truly appalling experience at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa on July 11, 2025, around 6 PM. What was supposed to be a relaxing stay quickly devolved into a shocking display of unprofessionalism and a complete lack of human decency from the front office staff. Upon our arrival with a confirmed reservation, we simply requested a specific room. However, Kenao and his female colleague (whose name I didn't catch) were immediately uncooperative and dismissive. The female employee seemed more interested in "kissing up" to Kenao, actively escalating the already hostile situation. When I asked to speak with a manager to address their unhelpful attitude, Kenao audaciously claimed to be the manager himself. Their behavior was beyond rude; it was devoid of any compassion or understanding for a family arriving late in the evening with a child. Instead of assisting us, they abruptly called security and ordered us to leave the premises. This act was not only incredibly humiliating but also deeply upsetting, especially for my daughter. For a hotel that prides itself on being a five-star establishment, the conduct of these employees was utterly unacceptable and a disgrace to the hospitality industry. Their actions were unprofessional, uncaring, and frankly, disqualifying for anyone working in a customer-facing role. I urge anyone considering staying at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa to be aware of the potential for such a disheartening and disrespectful experience. Monterey itself was wonderful the temperature was great the location from the motel to Monterey Bay aquarium in cannery row all the places we wanted to go was perfect within 10 minutes! So traveling back and forth to the motel was very easy! If you're looking for a place to stay this is by far the best and most economical place I've ever stayed and a lot of it is because of the staff. Highly recommend! The first night we were there we ate at the Old fisherman's grotto had some amazing clam chowder in a bread bowl! We had a very small breakfast at the little grocery store off of David Street close to the aquarium just to get something to eat but it was good! Food at the aquarium I warn you ahead of time is very expensive! I got a salad for $19 although the salad was really good :-) my boyfriend got a hamburger and fries for $22. But you must expect that in a place like that. All in all Monterey is great! Favorite spots were the aquarium but definitely the beach by cannery row because my boyfriend got on one knee and proposed to me, and they're just happened to be a guy playing violin above us! Very romantic! The shops in cannery row are great too check out the shell shop the people there are very nice and their prices are reasonable. If you're coming to the area in July pants a tank top and a light jacket and maybe a little bit of a jacket over that and tennis shoes for the walking. You'll do a lot of walking! But the weather was wonderful! A bit windy the first day but after that the next day was perfect about 68°, coming from Chico that is nice and comfortable! I hope all of this helps! I’m from Carmel Valley but now live up by Yosemite. . There is so much to see and do in the Monterey, Carmel and Carmel Valley area. Plan adding an extra day to your vacation. The Wharf, Cannery Row, the ocean side drive along Pacific Grove and Lovers Point is breathtaking. Carmel and the beautiful beaches are amazing. Don’t forget to take the drive into Carmel Valley where towards the end you will drive into The Village. There you’ll find shops and restaurants and wine tasting. So much to see and do! Places we recommend to dine.. Fisherman’s Grotto, El Torrittos on the water front in Cannery Row, Sur in the Barnyard, Kobe Steakhouse in Del Monte shopping center.. too many to mention!Guest review byJackiUnited States
