The more boring version of this post is that very few character traits are ‘good’ or 'bad’ on their own—what matters is the extent and the context—and even then you cannot 'cure’ every little flaw you have to be the perfect person without doing immense violence upon yourself.
So: my God, what a beautiful and complete recovery it must entail, if James were to reclaim a little bit of his glamour, the joy and confidence he has in his looks, after the ordeal that he has been through. And a little bit of his cockiness too, his sense of adventure and that fierce light he carries within himself—yes, no longer driven by a desire to fit in and impress because he is so ashamed of the circumstances of his birth, nor by an unquestioning embrace of the Victorian British Project, yes, calmer and more self-aware, but still, himself.
What i am saying is: a redeemed Fitzy does not look like Francis. And a redeemed Fitzy should get to be a little shallow still and secure enough not to be condemned for it by himself or by Francis or by anyone else who matters. Do you see my vision?
