Abstract

A solid-state image pickup deice includes a plurality of pixels for generating an image signal, a plurality of vertical signal lines connected to the pixels arranged in the vertical direction, a vertical scan circuit for selecting a plurality of pixels for each line and outputting image signals generated by pixels arranged on the same line, to vertical signal lines connected to the pixels, a plurality of horizontal switches arranged on respective vertical signal lines, a horizontal signal line to which an image signal output to a plurality of vertical signal lines is supplied via a plurality of horizontal switches, setting means for setting a value of n (n is a natural number) indicating the number of vertical signal lines selected simultaneously, a horizontal scan circuit for setting a period for validating the vertical signal line selected, according to the value of n and outputting a row selection pulse indicating the period while successively shifting it, and a horizontal selection circuit connected to the horizontal switches, supplied with the row selection pulse and the gate pulse deciding the drive timing of the horizontal switches, and driving the horizontal switches corresponding to the vertical signal line selected by the gate pulse and the row selection pulse. Accordingly, it is possible to realize lowered resolution during read out of an image signal with a simple configuration.
