Description

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING KNITTED ARTICLES, PARTICULARLY HOSIERY ITEMS, WITH A SINGLE KNITTING MACHINE
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing knitted articles, particularly hosiery items, with a single knitting machine for hosiery or other articles, particularly a circular machine, with regions knitted in different manners with a diversification effect similar to the effect obtainable with a gauge variation.
It is known that the knitting of a hosiery item or of a knitted article in general is characterized by a single gauge, which arises from a particular characteristic of the machine used for production, i.e., from the number of needles per unit length carried by the needle holder of the machine. In circular hosiery knitting machines, the gauge is expressed by the number of needles per inch, measured along the circumference on which the needles are arranged.
In recent years, the hosiery market has increasingly demanded special hosiery items, i.e., items having particular characteristics in order to meet specific requirements of users.
One of these requirements is the availability of hosiery items that have regions with different "weight". More specifically, in the case of winter hosiery items, the need is felt to have a hosiery item in which the foot region is "heavier" than the leg region, so as to better protect the foot from the cold, or there is the opposite need to have a hosiery item with a leg region that is "heavier" than the foot region if the user uses footwear that already offers excellent protection against the rigors of winter.
In the case of summer hosiery items, the need is felt to have a hosiery item in which the foot region is particularly "light" in order to limit the heating of the foot or "heavier" in order to be stronger or have a greater sweat absorption effect. Currently, in order to meet these requirements, the various regions of the article are produced with threads having mutually different diameters or counts, or by varying the type of thread used, or by varying the tightness of the knitting.
The possibilities to vary the count or type of the threads, however, are limited by the gauge of the machine, since as the gauge becomes finer the dimensions of the needles decrease and so does the distance between the needles; accordingly, with very fine gauges it is difficult to correctly loop threads having a high count or diameter.
The constancy of the gauge therefore limits the range of the count or type of threads that can be used and therefore limits the possibilities of diversification of "weight" among the various regions of the item. DE-19739239 discloses a method for knitting an article, in a linear knitting machine, wherein adjacent sections in a knitted article are knitted using each needle or every second needle alternatively.
The aim of the present invention is to solve the above problem, by providing a method that allows to produce, on a same machine, knitted articles, particularly hosiery items, with regions knitted in a different manner with a diversification effect similar to the effect obtainable with a change of gauge.
An object of the invention is to provide a method that allows to use, in the knitting of the various regions of the article, a wider range of threads, different in terms of count and/or type, than the range usable for knitting of the conventional type with a same hosiery knitting machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method that can be performed with current knitting machines for hosiery or other articles, particularly with circular machines.
This aim, these objects and others that will become better apparent hereinafter are achieved by a method for manufacturing knitted articles, and by a knitted article, as claimed in the appended claims.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the description of a preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the method according to the invention, illustrated only by way of non-limitative example in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a view of a hosiery item obtained with the method according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged-scale view of a portion of a knitted article produced with the method according to the invention.
With reference to the above cited figures, the method according to the invention substantially consists in performing, by means of a same knitting machine for hosiery or other articles, a first step for providing at least one first portion 1 of an article by using, for each row of knitting or portion of row of knitting, a certain number of needles per unit length, measured along the rectilinear extension of the needle holder, and in performing at least one second step for providing at least one second portion 2 of the article by using, for each row of knitting or portion of row of knitting, a number of needles per unit length, measured along the rectilinear extension of the needle holder, that is different from the number of needles per unit length used in the first step.
If the second portion 2 is provided by means of a number of needles per unit length that is smaller than the number of needles per unit length used in knitting the first portion 1 , at least one ladderproof row of knitting or portion of row of knitting 3, shown only schematically in Figure 2, is preferably provided at the end of the first portion 1 and before the beginning of the second portion 2.
Preferably, the first portion 1 is provided by means of a thread or threads having a different count with respect to the thread or threads used to provide the second portion 2. Moreover, the first portion 1 can be provided by means of a thread or threads of a different kind with respect to the thread or threads used to produce the second portion 2. Preferably, the second portion 2 is provided by means of a number of needles per unit length that is a multiple or submultiple of the number of needles per unit length used to provide the first portion 1. Merely by way of non-limitative example, with particular reference to Figure 2, the first portion 1 is produced by using all the needles of the machine, making all the needles knit at a feed or drop of the machine, while the second portion 2 is produced by making every other needle knit at a feed or drop of the machine. The activation of some needles and the exclusion of the other needles can be performed by virtue of the needle selection devices with which modern knitting machines for hosiery and other articles are equipped. Clearly, according to requirements, the portion 2 can be produced by means of an even smaller number of needles, for example by making one needle every two knit at a feed or drop of the machine.
It should be noted that the particular process of the method according to the invention can be applied to the entire article or can be limited to some regions thereof. The ladderproof row or rows 3 can be produced by means of interweaving of a known type that can be achieved by virtue of an appropriate actuation of the needles that is well-known to persons skilled in the art and is performed by virtue of the selection devices with which modern knitting machines for hosiery or other articles are equipped. In practice, the article obtained with the method according to the invention, particularly a hosiery item 4, as shown in Figure 1 , is constituted by at least two portions 1 and 2 that have mutually different numbers of stitches per unit length measured in the direction of the rows of knitting. By virtue of this fact, the portions 1 and 2 of the manufactured article have the appearance of two portions knitted with two different gauges.
This effect, which can be likened to a diversification of the gauge, allows to use, for producing the portions that appear to be obtained with a coarser gauge, threads having a considerably higher count than the threads usable with the gauge of the machine itself, since by virtue of the fact that the knitting in that region is produced by using needles that are mutually spaced by a greater extent than the spacing entailed by the gauge of the machine, it allows to loop threads with a higher count.
In practice, in order to produce the regions that appear to have a coarser gauge it is possible to use a thread that has a higher count, which normally cannot be used with the gauge of the machine, in order to achieve a particular "weight" at these regions. Vice versa, in order to produce the regions that appear to have a coarser gauge, it is possible to use threads having a particularly low count in order to achieve a particular "lightness" at these regions.
In this manner, in the particular case of hosiery items, it is possible to provide hosiery items with a foot region that is considerably lighter or heavier than the leg region, or vice versa, so as to fully meet the most disparate requirements of the user.
The underlying concept of the present invention can be used for various kinds of knitting, such as for example derby, toweling, stocking-stitch, pattern, or other types of knitting or aesthetic treatment of a known type, obtainable with current knitting machines for hosiery or other articles. The method according to the invention can be performed with current knitting machines for hosiery or other articles of the single-cylinder type, of the double-cylinder type, of the single-cylinder type with needles in the dial, of the mechanical or electronic type, having any diameter and any number of needles.
In practice it has been observed that the method according to the invention fully achieves the intended aim and objects, since it allows to produce, on a same machine, knitted articles, particularly hosiery items, with regions knitted in different manners with a diversification effect similar to the effect obtainable with a change in gauge, thus allowing to obtain articles with regions that are particularly "heavy" or particularly "light" and are capable of meeting the most disparate requirements of the user. The method thus conceived is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, within the scope of the appended claims. All the details may be replaced with other technically equivalent elements.
In practice, the threads used, as well as the counts of the threads used, may be any according to requirements.
