Abstract
The invention discloses a container composed of a polymer material integrated with an oxygen scavenging agent that is suitable for oxygen sensitive contents. The container includes at least one layer composed of material integrated with an oxygen scavenging agent. The oxygen scavenging layer only surrounds the atmosphere of the container while the rest of the container has an unmodified layer of the same polymer material. The polymer material may be selected from polyethylene terephthalate, a copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate and a mixture thereof. The oxygen scavenging agent may be selected from iron based compounds, organic compounds and biologically active compounds. The oxygen scavenging layer is in direct contact with the gaseous contents of the atmosphere of the container. The present invention also discloses a method for fabricating an oxygen scavenging container.
Claims
1. A bottle for containing a liquid food product, the bottle having an interior layer, the bottle capable of scavenging excess oxygen from an atmosphere formed within the sealed bottle, the interior layer of the bottle in direct contact with the liquid food product and the atmosphere of the sealed bottle, the interior layer having an upper portion and a lower portion, the lower portion contiguous with the upper portion and composed of polymer material, the upper portion in direct contact with and surrounding the atmosphere of the bottle, the lower portion surrounding the liquid food product, the polymer material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, a copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate, and a mixture thereof, the bottle characterized in that only the upper portion of the interior layer of the bottle consists of the polymer material integrated with an oxygen scavenging agent, the oxygen scavenging agent being present in an amount between 0.01% and 1.0% of the weight of the bottle, the oxygen scavenging agent selected from the group consisting of an iron based compound, an organic compound, and a biologically active compound.
2. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material has a metal oxide deposition thereon having a thickness range of approximately 5 to 500 nanometers and having a formula of MOx where x has a range of approximately 1.5 to approximately 2.5 and M is selected from the group consisting of silicon, aluminum and iron.
3. The bottle according to claim 1 further comprising a barrier layer juxtaposed to the interior layer.
4. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the iron based compound is selected from the group consisting of FeOx, pure iron, FexOz(OH)T and iron containing organic compounds.
5. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the oxygen scavenging agent is activated by exposure to a relatively high humidity environment.
6. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the organic compound is selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, vitamin E and vitamin B.
7. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the upper portion is a neck portion of a bottle.
8. The bottle according to claim 1 wherein the interior layer substantially prevents the degradation of a primary contents of the bottle.
9. The bottle according to claim 9 wherein the oxygen scavenging agent is present in an amount of 0.1% of the weight of the bottle.
AMENDED SHEET [ARTICLE 19) STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19
Claims 1-9 have been amended by filing replacement sheets for pages 13 and 14. Claims 1-9 have been limited to a bottle. Claim 1, the only independent claim, has been amended to conform with the "two-part" claim format. Claim 1 has also been limited to having the oxygen scavenging agent only present in the upper portion of the bottle. Claim 1 has also been limited to having the upper portion surrounding and in direct contact with a liquid food product.
