Abstract
If the free end of a light guide for the curing of composite fillings (plastic) is tapered in the shape of a screwdriver or chisel, it is possible to press the light guide down into the composite and achieve the desired linear contact with the neighbouring tooth.
Description
LIGHT GUIDE FOR HARDENING A DENTAL COMPOSIT
The invention refers to a light guide for the curing of composite fillings.
When reconstructing the approximal section of a crown with dental composite it has, previously, been impossible to reestablish the original contact conditions with pressure on the neighbouring tooth. The composite, which uncured is a doughlike substance, can not be compressed so that the correct contact pressure is obtained.
A system commonly used in the dental branch is the "Light Tip", manufactured by Svenska Dental Instrument AB, Upplands VSsby, Sweden. This system produces small coneshaped "pieces" of dental composite which can be pressed in between the restoraton and the neighbouring tooth, thereby creating pressure on the latter. Unfortunately, this only creates a contact point where as a contact line would be morphologically correct and this is not possible using the "Light Tip".
Another well-known attempt to solve the problem is the use of a transparent plastic cone attached to the end of a light guide. The plastic cone is pressed into the reconstruction and the composite is cured by light being sent through the plastic cone. This method is also unsatisfactory and does not create a contact area which is morphologically correct, that is to say a contact line. In this case, both hygiene and the power of the light transmission give cause for concern. Due to the fact that the plastic cone is mounted on the end of the light guide there are only a few patients that would be able to open their mouths wide enough for it to be positioned correctly. The invention suggests that the free end of the light guide is tapered like the end of a screwdriver or chisel.
When this type of light guide is pressed down into the reconstruction (composite), it is easy to achieve suitable and correct contact pressure on the neighbouring tooth. When the light is activated and sent through the tapered end of the light guide the composite will be cured with a linear structure which has contact to the neighbouring tooth. When the light guide is removed it leaves good linear contact pressure between the cured composite and the neighbouring tooth and the filling can be finished morphologically.
It should be noted that the light guide must, of course, be formed so that it can create the necessary pressure.
