Abstract
Procédé de régulation de la morphogénèse d'organes végétaux consistant à provoquer la sous-expression d'un gène homéotique responsable de la détermination de l'identité de l'organe végétal en question. Le procédé s'applique particulièrement aux fleurs et, à titre d'un premier exemple, le pétunia a été modifié pour présenter un verticille supplémentaire de pétales dérivés de la modification des cépales. Le verticille supplémentaire de pétales peut être formé par la conversion des cépales en pétales, et/ou par la stimulation de la croissance des structures de pétales existantes afin de définir des structures inversées qui apparaissent et présentent un second verticille. Le gène homéotique pétale vert chez le pétunia a été cloné et caractérisé et est divulgué dans la présente invention, seul et également en association avec des séquences de régulation de l'expression et dans des vecteurs pour l'expression ectopique transgénique. Dans un second exemple la même fleur a été modifiée afin de présenter un verticille de pétales ayant des caractéristiques cépaloïdes sur au moins une portion des pétales. L'invention concerne aussi la construction d'un promoteur dérivé du promoteur CaMV 35S et désigné dans l'invention m35S. Ce promoteur est particulièrement approprié pour la construction de transgènes homéotiques selon le procédé décrit dans l'invention. Les fleurs pétunias ayant un verticille de pétales modifiés préparées par le présent procédé sont églament décrites.
