Definitions
- Impact protection device for a motor vehicle particularly in the area of a passenger
- the invention relates to an impact protection device for a motor vehicle, in particular in the area of a passenger, according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Impact protection devices are generally known in which, in the event of a front impact, an airbag inflates quickly and automatically in front of a vehicle occupant. The vehicle occupant then falls with his head and upper body into the gas sack, as a result of which an impact on solid objects is absorbed.
- the gas bag unit with a folded gas bag and a propellant for inflating the gas bag is usually attached to the steering wheel under a baffle plate.
- An impact protection device with an automatically inflatable gas bag also has the above-mentioned advantages for a passenger and works in particular automatically, for example independently of seat belts, which must be put on by a passenger on his own responsibility. In some countries with no obligation to wear a seat belt, protective devices with a gas bag must be provided in the passenger area in the future.
- An arrangement of an impact protection device with a gas bag unit in the area of the passenger side is already known (DE-OS 38 00 652).
- the gas bag unit is arranged behind an outlet opening in the control panel.
- the outlet opening is covered by a flap which is connected to the control panel via hinges in such a way that it can be pivoted upwards.
- the flap itself is a separate component made of solid and dimensionally stable material.
- the underside or the flap edge pointing towards the passenger is connected to a crosspiece of the control panel via predetermined breaking elements.
- the gas bag unit If the gas bag unit is activated in the event of a front impact, the gas bag inflates and thus exerts pressure on the flap from the inside. As a result, the predetermined breaking elements tear off and the flap pivots upward through the gas bag which penetrates, as a result of which the outlet opening for the gas bag is cleared in an area in front of the passenger.
- an outlet opening with a separate flap hinged via hinges is thus provided in the immediate viewing area of the passenger on the control panel.
- the edges of the flap and the outlet opening are thus inevitably visible, as a result of which such a control panel does not have a continuous shape and does not give a visually appealing impression.
- the flap must also be installed precisely and with low tolerances on the circumferential edges, since irregularities are particularly noticeable here.
- the manufacture and assembly of a control panel with an additional flap is complex.
- the object of the invention is to further develop a crash protection device of the generic type and, in particular, to design a control panel such that it can be designed to be optically appealing at low manufacturing and assembly costs.
- control panel or the stable inner parts of the control panel such as Sheet metal inserts, in the area of the outlet opening and the flap, are continuously covered with and / or embedded in a tearable material.
- the predetermined breaking points lie between the edge areas of the outlet opening and the flap in the tearable material.
- control panel according to the invention is inexpensive and relatively simple to manufacture.
- the flap edge pointing towards the passenger compartment is exposed and the predetermined breaking points lie as tear lines between the edge regions of the outlet opening and the flap which run approximately in the longitudinal plane of the vehicle. This makes it easier to open the flap in a targeted manner.
- Claim 3 claims a specific design of the control panel in such a way that the control panel is a sheet metal insert contains, which is recessed in the area of the outlet opening or the flap.
- the sheet-metal insert is foamed in a manner known per se with a plastic display layer, which in turn is coated on the outside with a firmly adhering, elastic and firm plastic layer as the outer skin.
- This outer skin is usually structured and grained.
- the foam layer and the outer skin also cover the area of the flap and the outlet opening so that the tear lines between the flap and the outlet opening are formed in the foam and in particular in the outer skin.
- a control panel designed in this way with a flap that can be torn open can be designed in the form of a conventional control panel without a flap.
- the flap consists of a flexible insert mat embedded in the tearable material or the foam layer.
- This mat is fixed and held on one side at the area in the vehicle front direction and transversely to the vehicle direction to form a hinge even during the tearing process.
- the flexible insert mat is thus bent and unfolded over the hinge area when the activated airbag is torn open after the tear lines have been torn open, so that the airbag can emerge from the outlet opening.
- the flap largely closes again when an elastic material is used. This is particularly advantageous with regard to a secondary impact that often occurs, in which the effect of the gas bag is already over. In this case, a person does not fall into the open edges of a flap, but onto the normally padded control panel which is closed again by the flap, as a result of which injuries can be prevented or reduced.
- an embedded carrier sheet is proposed, under which the Insert mat and folded and fixed at the edge opposite the outlet opening.
- the edge of the carrier plate on the passenger compartment determines the hinge region at which the insert mat folds up.
- the carrier plate can be reinforced by beads.
- the insert mat is expediently held and fixed on the carrier plate according to claim 7 via a clamped locking profile or via a screwed carrier profile.
- claim 8 proposes to weaken the tear lines at least in the area of the tear edges, in particular in the outer skin. This weakening can take place from the inside so that it is not visible from the outside. It has proven to be advantageous and sufficient to apply such a weakening only at the beginning of the tear lines, so that the tearing and the direction at the beginning of the tearing process are predetermined.
- An activated gas bag exerts a relatively large pressure on the panel, which was initially closed, from the inside. It is therefore necessary, on the one hand, to support the gas bag arrangement itself stably backwards and, on the other hand, to stably connect the area of the control panel around the outlet opening to the vehicle body.
- Sheet metal inserts and the carrier sheet already mentioned are proposed as concrete measures for this, wherein according to claim 10 hooks should be provided for connection to the vehicle body.
- the beginning of the tear lines at the edge region of the outlet opening should also be supported by stable sheet metal insert parts.
- Clamping plates attached from the outside and connected to the sheet metal insert parts can also advantageously be used, next to which the marking edges lie.
- the tearing of the outer skin, in particular with a corresponding weakening is initiated to initiate the entire tear-open process much easier.
- control panel is pulled out roof-like in a control panel nose toward the passenger compartment in a manner known per se.
- the hinge area should lie on the upper nose side so that when the gas bag is activated, the nose area essentially opens upwards. The gas bag is thus guided into a position directly in front of a person concerned.
- Claim 13 therefore proposes to extend the flap under this nose area to form an integrally formed diaphragm.
- the control panel can thus end in the remaining area under the control panel nose, but a large outlet opening can be covered by the flap with the molded-on cover.
- the integrally formed panel can run in alignment with panels mounted on the body, so that the overall arrangement is well designed.
- the molded cover can also be provided with a wooden cover.
- a sheet metal insert is also advantageously embedded here, the insert mat also being pulled further into the panel and embedded there.
- foam wedges lying next to one another from the inside should be contained there according to claim 15.
- these gas wedges prevent the gas bag from getting caught in the nose area from the inside when it emerges.
- the gas bag is directed forwards and downwards, as a result of which it reaches a position which is effective for its safety function.
- the control panel nose receives the elasticity required and suitable for a secondary impact in the region of the flap.

- FIG. 2 shows a section along the line A-A through the control panel according to FIG. 1,
- FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of area B from FIG.

- round instruments 2 in the area of the driver and with air guiding slots 3, 4 to the front and to the side windows.
- air guiding slots 3, 4 to the front and to the side windows.
- An impact protection device is attached in front of the front passenger seat and is explained in more detail in connection with FIG. 2.
- An airbag unit 10 is arranged in a separate container 11 behind and below the control panel 1 in front of the front passenger seat and is held and supported by stable support elements 12. 8th
- control panel 1 is designed on the left and right side of the passenger area in the usual way with a sheet metal insert 13 which is embedded in a foam layer 14 and which in turn has an outer skin 15 made of an elastic and
- a flap 16 which covers an outlet opening for the gas bag.
- the sheet insert 13 in the area of the flap 16 is
- the flap 16 itself is realized by an insert mat 17 made of poly filament yarn and glass fiber reinforced plastic embedded in the foam layer 14.
- the insert mat 17 is continued under a likewise embedded support plate 18 in the vehicle front direction and on the rear side
- the carrier plate 18 is provided in the area of the latching profile 19 with a hooking device 20 to form a fixed body carrier 21.
- the insert mat 17 runs through a control panel nose 22 protruding toward the passenger compartment up to the edge 23, at which the remaining control panel 1 ends and only the flap 16 is extended downward by a molded-on cover part 24.
- the insert mat 17 is inserted into this panel part 24
- the foam layer 14 and the outer skin 15 cover the area of the outlet opening or the flap and are also guided over the molded-on cover part 24.
- a wooden cover 26 is fastened on the cover part 24 30.
- the molded-on panel part 24 is molded downward in approximately the same width and runs flush with the body-side panel 5.
- the control panel nose 22 is provided from the inside with adjacent foam wedges 29, which are indicated by dashed lines in FIG. 1. These foam wedges 29 are foamed and fastened on their upper side, but adhesion to the passenger compartment is prevented by an inserted, smooth film 30.
- the beginning of the tear line 27 is shown enlarged in FIG. 3. It can be seen that the tear line 27 begins approximately where the panel part 24 protrudes downward. The beginning of the tear line 27 contains a weakening by approximately half the material thickness to form a scribe edge 31. In this area, the switch panel at the edge of the outlet opening is reinforced by sheet metal inserts and is supported on the body side. An externally placed adhesive plate 32 is connected to these sheet metal inserts and lies directly next to the marking edge 31.
- the gas bag unit 10 If the gas bag unit 10 is activated in the event of a collision, the volume of the folded gas bag suddenly increases and the flap 16 is so heavily loaded from the inside that it tears open.
- the tear-open process begins at the weakened tear-open edge 31, the shear effect being increased here by the clamping plate 32.
- the occurring forces are absorbed by the insert plates, the carrier plate 18, the hooking device 20, all of which are attached around the outlet opening in the fixed area of the control panel, and introduced into the vehicle body.
- the tearing process then continues in such a way that the outer skin 15 and the foam layer 14 tear open along the tear lines 27, 28 and the flap 16 together with the panel part 24 is thereby lifted, as is indicated by the broken lines in FIG. 2.
- the foam wedges 29, which are not adhered to on their front side because of the film 30, remain approximately in their position or are only raised slightly. This prevents the gas bag from getting caught on the inside in the control panel nose area and, in addition, the gas bag is guided forward and downward into a desired position through the inner edges 33 of the foam wedges 29.
- the flap 16 closes again due to its elastic articulation, so that no dangerous and sharp edges protrude in the event of a secondary impact.
- the invention provides an impact protection device or a control panel which is inexpensive to manufacture and assemble, which can be designed optically and which also brings safety-related advantages.
