Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED SASH-LOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 96.65l` dated Novombcrl), 1869.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern,.- I
Be it known that I, l?. A. ALTMAEIR, 'of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and inthe State of Pennsylvania, have invented a'Lock for Fastening the Sashes of Windows; and I- do hereby declare that the following is al full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a face view of the lock with the top face removed; Fig. 2, the full view of the lock with the button operating in the slot and thrust back.
The nature of this invention is such that when it is applied to awindowsash it will siecurely fasten the sash by means of a catch that cannot be unlocked or displaced without moving said catch by means of the button operating in a slot on the surface of the lock.
A represents the bottom plate of this lock, in which are the two actuating-tumblers of the lock.
B represents the top plate, fastened to the 1 tumblers and bottom plate A by means of screws a and b. In this top plate is a slot, C, in which the button D moves in fastening or unfastening the lock. The button D is lnade so asto be screwed into an aperture in the tumbler, to be presently described.
Within the frame A, forming the lower plate or chamber of the lock, are placed two tum-A blers, E and F, formed of solid pieces of metal, and fastened to the top plate as well as the bottom plate by means of the screws a and b. The button D is made to screw into an aperture in an arm of the tumbler F, so that when the two plates A and B are fastened together the button will be suffered to slide along the whole distance of slot C on plate B.
The tumbler E, made in 'the manner shown, with a protuberance or lock-fastening, G, which is thrust backward or forward as the button D. is moved, and with a smaller protuberance for another purpose, hereinafter to be described, is secured to the plate A by means of the screw b, which allows it to be rotated within the chamber at pleasure when I e. The lug or protuberance H on tumbler E is for the purpose of firmly securing the sash and window-frames, so that no rattling noise occasioned by the wind cauoccur.
Having described the special devices of this lock, I will proceed to describe its opera tion.
The two parts of the lock being fastened together, and the tumblers iu position as shown in Fig. 1, and the whole secured to a sash or windowirame by screws c and d, it will be observed that lug G is firmly thrust forward, aud cannot be moved backward except the button D is pushed upward in the slot C, thus releasing the lug G. Until this is effected, in fact, both lugs, G and H, cannot be thrust out of their position by any means unless actuated upon by said button D.
This improvement is admirably adapted for windows on railroad-cars, as by it no motion of the cars could displace the lug, and the sash would remain securely fastened until relieved by means of the button. The simple mechanism composing this improvement is such that itwould never break, nor would it be liable to get out of order.
Having described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The sash fastener or holder, composed of the pivoted bolt E and the pivoted vtwo-pronged tumbler, so arranged that no direct pressure' can push back the bolt until the pronged tu1nbler is rotated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing VI have hereunto set my hand this 26th day 0f March, 1869.
l?. A. ALTMAEIR.
