NA PErERs, NOTO-LITHOGRAFMER WA ateut i @fitta LOUIS BRU-MBAOII, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 87,907, dated Ma/rch 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR AND GATE-LATCHES.
To all whom 'it may' concern Be it known that I, LoUIs BRUMBACH, of Reading, Berks county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Fastener for Doors and Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a cheap and simple fastener, constructed in the peculiar manner fully described hereafter, for attachment to doors, gates, &c.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved fastener for gates and doors;
Figure 2, the same, with the parts in a different position; and
Figure 3, a sectional plan View.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several Views.
The bolt A ofthe fastener is arranged to slide within a metal case, B, which is secured to a door or gate, W, by screws, or other fastenings, the outer end of the bolt being adapted to a keeper, X, in the post or frame Y.
From each side of the said bolt projects a rod, a, througha diagonal slot, b, in the side of the case, so that when the bolt is drawn back, by means of the said rod, itis at the same time diagonally raised to the top ofthe case, as shown in lig. 2.
On the under side of the bolt are two notches, having edges, c c, inclined at an angle corresponding with that of the diagonal slots of the case, these edges resting upon pins d d, in the case, which serve as guides to maintain the bolt in a horizontal position.
A cam-lever, F, is arranged to turn upon a pin, e, which is secured to projections on the upper portion of the case, the cam of the said lever, when the latter is depressed, as seen in fig. l, passing through an opening ibrined in the top of the case, and bearing upon the upper edge of the bolt, eii'ectually preventing the latter from heilig raised, and consequently from being` drawn back.
By means of this` simplearrangement, the bolt, when moved forward and lowered in its case, can be readily locked, while, after turning the cani-lever back to the position shown in iig. 2, the bolt is at liberty to be moved back.
In order to add to the simplicity of the fastener, I have in the present instance so arranged the screws which secure the fastener to the gate or door, that they shall actas the guiding-pins d d.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.. A metal case, containing a bolt, A, which bears and slides diagonally on pins, or lugs, without changing its horizontal position, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. lhe bolt A, having rods, or pills a, and notches .0, with inclined edges, in combination with the pins cl (l ofthe case, and the inclined slots b of the latter, all being constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I l1L ve signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS BRUMBAOH.
