Description

Patented om. 20,1868.
To all lwhom it mor/y concern: v

tinted time @anni @mit JOHN A. MAOKINNON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
- Lette/rs Patent No. 83,294, dated October 20, 1 868.
` IMPROVED HOLD-BACK FOR CARRIAGES.
Y The Schedule' referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
B e it known that I, JOHN A. MAGKINNON, of Oleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, andState of Ohio, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Hold-Backs for Oarriages; and -I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is-a side view of the hold-back.
,Figure 2, a view of the top.
Figure 3, a longitudinal section.
Figures 4 and 5, detached sections.
` Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the different views.
The nature of this invention relates to a device for holding back a carriage in descending a hill, or on backing the same, and which, when the horse is unhitched from the whilletree, will become self-detachmg.
In fig.' 1, A represents a section of a carriagethill,'to which the apparatus is attached, and which consists of a hook, B, a vertical section of which is shown in iig. 3. 4
It will be seen that the base and finger of the hook are hollow or chambered, and that, in the front end of the base, is pivoted a tongue, C, having its ee end directed inwardly, the purpose of which will hereinafter be shown.
D is a yoke, in-which is flXed a double arm, E, the relative position of which, to the yoke, is shown in gs. 4 and 5.
At the opposite end ofthe yoke is a loop, F, whereby the hook is strapped and attached tothe harness.
The practical operation of this device is as follows:
Figs. 1 and2 represent the yoke in its connection with the hook, and as in practical use. In this position, it Will be observed that thelower lip of the arm is projected under the tongue, as shown in fig. 3, and that the tip of said tongue reaches up to-and presses Nowgas the tongue cannot be turned further.` upward, nor can it be turned dowh while the arm is under it, it will be obvious that the yoke will remain iii its connection with the hook, as it cannot slide back out of the hook, in consequence of the present position of the tongue.
In. order to detach the, yoke from 'the hook, the
position of the yoke isrevers'ed. Thus, on turning it upward, in the direction ofthe dotted line a, g, 3, the
upper lip ofthe arm will be brought to the end of the finger ofthe hook, and, at the same time, will depress the end of-the tongue until it comes under the arm,
, over which the yoke can now be easily slipped from 'fright, or, in the ordinary course of unhitching him from the carriage, the 'hooks will, of themselves, uncouple, and thus prevent danger, and save time and labor in unhitching the hold-back straps.
It will be observed that/there is a spring, H, iig. 3, located at the base of the hook.
'It will also be seen that the hook is attached to the thillrby means of band I, which surrounds the thill, and is secured thereto by the key J. By this means,
the hook caribe moved along on the thill, and adjusted to any desired place; hence, dispensing with the use of screws or bolts driven into the Wood as a means of fastening the hook.
I do not claim the spring H, nor any eccentric-cam, in my device; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Il. The loop Fand yoke D, arranged at right angles to each other, or nearly so, the latter passing around hook B, and provided with the bar, having arms, E,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. rlhe continuous band I, attached to the hook, in combination with the key J and shaft A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The loop F and yoke D, provided with the crossbar and armsE, in combination with the hook B and tongue C, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
J OHN ,ed MAGKINNN. Witnesses: W. H. BURRIDGE,
E. E. WAITE.
